My friend was just making a bit of a joke as a troll. It's almost impossible for me to accurately gauge what spells were actually used. It sounds like Cure 1 spam from his end with the healers he got when Afflatus Solace, Regen and Cure 2 would be far better ones to use.

The situation you mentioned might happen in Aurum Vale with how tight damage can get there with no Medica 2. I have used Swiftcast with the Holy to get the stun out quicker and used Benediction to make it work. It is quite often I give all 4 members Regen for the boss battles in that dungeon due to the AoE damage being high.

Aside from Aurum Vale, I have often times placed a Regen on the tank while they pull with the HoT no longer drawing stray enemy hate. Works pretty well to slowly get the tank back up to full while the enemies are stunned to death. I have Afflatus spells and Tetragrammaton ready too in case a stray mini tank buster is thrown out in between stuns.
