I'm glad to see, looking at this thread, that I'm not the only one puzzled by this obsession some of the nostalgia folks have for CoP. I remember when CoP came out, it was exciting, I hadn't been playing for long, and my LS was willing to run Promy multiple times to try it.
Unfortunately, because it took so long to get to promy and a wipe was usually the end of the run that night, we often had to switch people out. Strategies got confused, and at the end of the day we had a lot of people with one or two promys done who didn't have the time to attempt the ones the others needed. Then people lost interest in Promy until Sea came, but the people who were interested in sea were relentless enough to find their own static CoP parties. Because of the level cap, even when I got past the lvl30 I needed for those fights, it didn't help me, and for a very long time I had to waste a lot of space keeping a lvl30 set of armor "just in case" someone actually wanted to run it.
Years passed, no one was really all that willing to run through the whole CoP storyline for anyone who needed it (certainly not a full party's worth of people), and as a result a good chunk of endgame was locked out to new players or those not fortunate enough to get in while it was popular. The only way I and many others got to see the end of the storyline was when they finally removed those maddening level caps, and by then it was long past the point of being relevant except for admiring the actual mechanics. So no, I don't want anything resembling CoP's game mechanics, especially level caps that defeat half the point of an MMO. If they try unique things like the Diabolos fight or the climb up Parradomo Tor, they'd better fix the engine to not be incompetent with positioning like FFXI and FFXIV's 1.0 engine are.
What would I like to be reminiscent of CoP? A good storyline, well done cutscenes, and some unique boss fight mechanics. Arguably, at least a couple of these were done better in ToAU and/or WoTG. ]As far as this game goes, I already think the Ifrit and Garuda fights far exceed anything in CoP, so copying CoP would be a leap backwards. FFXIV's cutscenes are obviously much better, and I think the storylines we're getting are quite good. So, why do we need to be talking about CoP again?Nothing else to add to this. 100% of what I wanted to say.As far as this game goes, I already think the Ifrit and Garuda fights far exceed anything in CoP, so copying CoP would be a leap backwards.
