I mean christ nearly 2 years later and I STILL got a hard on for FFXI. It was THAT good. That is because memories and bonds formed with the other players there were visceral and powerful. Because the challenges we faced were just as difficult. When you overcome adversity it feels GOOD.

When you log on for a few hours, don't even try to work towards a goal, then suddenly cap out and have nothing to do. It feels BAD.
I could not disagree more....have you played other MMORPG before saying that ? I can play no problem and grind an RPG. Why would I not be able to do the same in a MMORPG ? The only difference is some teamwork, it does not need to be more painful than having all my teeth removed...your only using FFXI has your example and disregarding everything else out there. But the other game out there are the ones having player influx, while FFXI was dying from poor gaming mechanics.
