I think most people have at least heard the word starboard somewhere, whether it be from old sailing books/movies or Star Trek or whatever. Actually knowing what it means is a whole other kettle of fish. I think most people have heard of a poop deck, but ask them to define what it is and you'll get more scatological explanations than nautical.
