On the upside, I got to analyze why the Allagans didn't deploy the Ultima weapon in ancient times, like ever. It's basically a flawed weapon design: They tried to make a multi-modal combat system that could engage in melee combat with large swarms of infantry, but also built an artillery mode that could fire the ultima spell. The problem is that from the cutscene it seems that the ultima spell has to be centered on the ultima weapon, and if the "heroes" hadn't had Hydalyn there to shield themselves it would have obliterated the weapon and the heroes together in one giant conflagration of energy. On top of which, using the spell disables the anti-infantry combat features so the vehicle requires supporting infantry or other units while it completes the firing operation. The Ascians are the ones who were supposed to be partially responsible for several of the mishaps of the ancient allagans so that doesn't exactly shine a lot of positive light on those guys.

If you're going to be an arms dealer, at least try not to kill the customers. People are going to remember that and then you aren't going to be able to sell your super duper weapons since martyrdom is a once in a lifetime experience.

Hahaha, business logic! (and going by the Allagans' Portal-style AI and training system on Azys Lla, infantry is definitely expendable to them...)

My own observation re. Ultima is that it looks like an overpowered version of Summoner's "Deathflare" spell - which gives interesting implications to quite what our summoner powers are drawing on....

(unless that gets covered in Stormblood. I'm not there yet.)
