I was thinking of a constructive way to reply to this when a really whacked out odd ball idea popped into my head. What if, mind the silly names for sake of ease of explanation, the class had what amounts to a "syringe" gun. Certain weapon skills that would damage an enemy and extract an... well... "extract" from the mob (or perhaps even a party member?) Maybe this would be somewhat randomized with certain abilities being available all the time and certain ones not, but then these "extracts" could be mixed to create infusions which can then be injected into mobs or party members giving blood-for-blood esque effects (IE: you get something good in exchange for something bad.)

Maybe give a boss damage vs blunt up for monks at the cost of piercing damage (if you had no drg/mch/bard in the party) I dunno, just spewing an idea.
