Could you have imagined what would have happened if Blackwing Lair had released at a difficulty level lower than MC though? And we all got a piece of max level gear every 2 weeks?

FFXIV actually has a lot of content, they just designed the progression system extremely poorly. I never played SWTOR but I heard the game was such a failure because they pretty much handed you BiS and that was the end of it. That is pretty much what they did with darklight and myth gear. Here we are 3 months into the game and I know several people in full i90 already and most people I have on my friends list are on turns 4 or 5. And we're still 4 months away from any content that can actually use i90 as well... That's what is wrong.

Tomes in this game were probably given away at rates that were way too high from dungeons that were too low of a level. It was most likely done this way because they didn't have time to have a complete gear progession system in place for release. If 2.1 was what we had at release, and phil tomes weren't rewarded in CM or Prae, and Myth tomes weren't rewarded in WP, AK, or HM Primals. We probably would have a much slower and more creative endgame that was more about progressing into more challenging content and not about speedrunning these faceroll dungeons over and over and capping out on token gear in record time.

Also, as much as everyone would hate it now, ilevel would really help bridge the gap between 'hardcore' and 'casual' players. Stifling the elitism and largely removing the 'relic or you're insignificant' stigma that this game has developed.

Lets just hope they've learned from their mistakes and realize handing out gear does not make for a more fun or rewarding game, and certainly doesn't help your community.
