So getting to 50 in less than 2 days is a challenge? Saying that its a time sink therefore it is challenging doesn't make it so, you are correct about that. But being able to achieve something in a very, very, very short amount of time isn't a challenge either. Where is the challenge in being end game ready, such as it is, in less than 3 weeks? Even on WoW it takes a few days to ding 90, it used to take longer before WoW got nerf happy. Being Level 75 in 11 meant something. It meant you took the time to get there, it meant you worked for it. People still curse Maat to this day, it was a damn good challenge! Oh look I can get my AF in 15 minutes (5 min depending on the class)in ARR, in 11 it took a long time, it took dedication, putting on full AF made you grin ear to ear because you worked at it and you made it!

Challenge is good, I also welcome it, but not working for something = no challenge.

Why is time even an issue?

People need to stop viewing video games as a race to get to the end.

Having less time to play can be a good thing after-all. Means the game will last longer.

You cannot help but race to the end in this game as it was designed that way.
It took me 2 + months to only get WHM to 50 and I restarted on a new server.
So I pretty much gone at a Snail's pace. Once you hit the first 50, it goes
    downhill from there.

Yeah it seems all MMORPGs are designed that way these days.

That post you quoted was in reference to a 11 vs 14 debate. A lot of people use time constraints to explain to why MMORPGs are now designed to be a race to the end, but I don't understand why.

I'm just shocked at how poorly planned end game was. Logging in for a few hours one evening and completing your weeks worth of content is pretty bad. I'm doing some SWTOR PvP during the week just to pass the time.

Timesinks aren't a challenge, just a necessity to prolong mmos. FFXIV is full of them, just whether you find them fun or not.

It's a shame really, but that's what this generation of gamers want. SE will go where the money is.
That's how it is in all mediums nowadays.

The thrill is still there, but much less than before and does not last anywhere near as long just because I have already had that experience even if it isn't the same game.
Yeah, that must be it. When I first started playing games it was on an Atari 2600, started FF on NES in 1990 when I was 29 years old, played all the FF series as well as many, many other games and you know what? FF XI was still magical to me, hmmm.

It has nothing to do with the amount of time people have to play, if they only have 2 hours to play a night it doesn't matter which game they choose to waste their 120 minutes playing.
You are confusing the amount of time players have available to play with what players feel they accomplished in that time.
In XI you could start running to Jeuno, get killed in Junger Forest, homeport & do it all over again in the same 2 hours it took to max level a char, get the best gear and run all the dungeons in another game.
And guess which game a player would feel they got more done in?

Nothing to do with the quantity of time (objective), just the quality of time (subjective)

Getting killed by Ghost at night was not fun, but it made it interesting. Sure it sucked, but it made the game exciting.

MMORPG today just don't have the same excitement because if you die, you don't get any penalty....and rarely will you die any case.

Imagine if you're resting in a Camp and it turned into night and a Ghost pop up and wiped everyone like in FFXI, the kids today would never buy the game.

Kids want everything easy. They want to be CEO and make $150k a year when they graduate with their English degree
