You dont need a lot of time but you do need the open world to pose a threat, furthure more this is a MMO it is meant to last a long time so the excuse that these players dont have time is BS.

Why is time even an issue?
People need to stop viewing video games as a race to get to the end.
Having less time to play can be a good thing after-all. Means the game will last longer.
You cannot help but race to the end in this game as it was designed that way.
It took me 2 + months to only get WHM to 50 and I restarted on a new server.
So I pretty much gone at a Snail's pace. Once you hit the first 50, it goes
downhill from there.

Yeah it seems all MMORPGs are designed that way these days.
That post you quoted was in reference to a 11 vs 14 debate. A lot of people use time constraints to explain to why MMORPGs are now designed to be a race to the end, but I don't understand why.

Yeah, that must be it. When I first started playing games it was on an Atari 2600, started FF on NES in 1990 when I was 29 years old, played all the FF series as well as many, many other games and you know what? FF XI was still magical to me, hmmm. You ever think that maybe the reason the "magic" is gone is because you became older, more experienced and probably desensitized? Sure when I first started playing games it was a new experience and I was easily stimulated, but after years of playing I'm not going to get the same effect even when a new game comes out as I did when the entire experience was new.
The thrill is still there, but much less than before and does not last anywhere near as long just because I have already had that experience even if it isn't the same game.
It has nothing to do with the amount of time people have to play, if they only have 2 hours to play a night it doesn't matter which game they choose to waste their 120 minutes playing.
You are confusing the amount of time players have available to play with what players feel they accomplished in that time.
In XI you could start running to Jeuno, get killed in Junger Forest, homeport & do it all over again in the same 2 hours it took to max level a char, get the best gear and run all the dungeons in another game.
And guess which game a player would feel they got more done in?
Nothing to do with the quantity of time (objective), just the quality of time (subjective)

I agree. I was 33 years old when I played FFXI and it was exciting. It was my 4th MMORPG after EQ, EQOA, AC, DOAC...on top of tons of MUD I played on BB service paying $3.99 a hour. Everything is made too easy today. We don't want the stupid time sink, that's why I quit FFXI, too much grinding when it first came out...but make it exciting like having Ghost popping up at night and having to run or die!!! Death is exciting.

This.
Up to this point, FFXI is still my favorite MMO experience. However, i ended up having to quit due to lack of time to commit on my part. If it was simply game content clearing that took alot of time, that would have been fine. But the ECONOMY forced you to invest LOTS of time in other things (like standing around for hours waiting for an NM to pop that you might not grab and even if you did it might not drop that item you desired). it's funny that no one ever brings up the economy in these FFXI recollections...because that was a major factor in the time sink the game became.
I agree with almost everything said here about the FFXIV vs. FFXI comparisons. I do wish that FFXIV was more memorable and that it was more difficult. But I do appreciate the fact that I can actually play it while maintaining a life outside the game.
Discovering new places in FFXI was great. The first time you did it. Then when you had to spend 30-45 minutes running through these places just to get to another place where you'd spend an hour yelling for party members then another 4-5 hours grinding on the same mob...that "adventure" doesn't seem so attractive anymore.

MMOs are not the timesink they used to be nowadays

I am glad that sooo many people had fun running for 45 minutes to a freekin zone, to pick something up then home teleport back to jeuno. Lol nothing has caused a larger sigh to escape my mouth when I realized I must do something like this. And fyi! Once you get a chocobo licence in ffxi there is NO danger in any zones! Woaaah!!
But yeah, ffxi was nothing but a headache. I came into it waay late but when I got to lvl 99 it wasn't even worth logging in unless I could play for 5+ hours because that is how long it took to accomplish ANYTHING. Mmm no thanks. I am sorry that us "casuals" are ruining the game for people who want that kind of game play... But perhaps this will do you good? You shouldn't be in front of a computer for 5+ hours!! lol

Hey bro do what I do, Play RO lol.
