Not to mention it only makes sense a game that peaked at 500k subs would be SE's most profit making game of the time. It charged a monthly fee, cost the same as a new game, and had many expansions. If FFXI wasn't the game that made the most profit at that time I'd be extremely confused.
I do. My point is, a group of people titled "FFXI Fans" made it the most profitable. You can buy FFVII on PSN right now, but even 7, including the movie, have not made more than 11.

FFXI fans by and large are NOT still playing FFXI. Sure, there are still holdouts, and Japanese players who really love their PS2's. But with the announcement of 2.0 many whole linkshells left FFXI for FFXIV.

Why would SE want to miss a perfect opportunity to keep those people in the family, rather then have them move to other MMO's?

I played FFXI (on a PS2, then later PC) since US Launch, camped out and had a midnight copy.

But when things really got crazy in FFXI, I left, and found a new home in EvE.
You want grindy and unforgiving, and to have the Dev's cheer you on when you rip off people for millions. Play EvE.

But, I missed aspects of 11, and am giving 14 a go. But as the game is now. Its a MMO that only needs to be played once a week.
In one weekend day, you can burn your Coil run, cap myth, and get a job to 50. Then wait a week to do it again.
Glad to know I pay for Mon-Sun but have enough content for only Sat.
