I really don't think that's how the conversation is going at SE.

I must be crazy, but I think there is room for a little more FFXI in this to ease the transition of FFXI players, without mucking things up too much for the new customers.
You do realize that article is speaking of FF14 1.0?

Not to mention it only makes sense a game that peaked at 500k subs would be SE's most profit making game of the time. It charged a monthly fee, cost the same as a new game, and had many expansions. If FFXI wasn't the game that made the most profit at that time I'd be extremely confused.

The article wasn't about FF14 period, 1.0 or otherwise. It mentions it but not as a comment from SE who only talked about xi, instead it is just something IGN decided to comment on.

Really? Cause SE just recently said that 14 passed the 600k sub mark surpassing xi's peak. Huh, I didn't know SE doesn't have its own figures.

Further edit: It wasn't dieing before abyssea, but it was in a lul which I personally think was tied to them not putting enough effort into ffxi because they were also working on 14 at the same time. Then abyssea came along and turned a lul into a boon for some and the death of the game for others.

I do. My point is, a group of people titled "FFXI Fans" made it the most profitable. You can buy FFVII on PSN right now, but even 7, including the movie, have not made more than 11.

FFXI fans by and large are NOT still playing FFXI. Sure, there are still holdouts, and Japanese players who really love their PS2's. But with the announcement of 2.0 many whole linkshells left FFXI for FFXIV.

Why would SE want to miss a perfect opportunity to keep those people in the family, rather then have them move to other MMO's?

I played FFXI (on a PS2, then later PC) since US Launch, camped out and had a midnight copy.

But when things really got crazy in FFXI, I left, and found a new home in EvE.
You want grindy and unforgiving, and to have the Dev's cheer you on when you rip off people for millions. Play EvE.

But, I missed aspects of 11, and am giving 14 a go. But as the game is now. Its a MMO that only needs to be played once a week.
In one weekend day, you can burn your Coil run, cap myth, and get a job to 50. Then wait a week to do it again.
Glad to know I pay for Mon-Sun but have enough content for only Sat.

Granted. Yes i do miss alot of friends i made in the game, and it did suck when they started to change alot of the game itself and i too left for good. But even so, doesn't change the relevance of what i said. To them their 11 fans are still playing 11 and for the (i assume large) majority that left after it changed from the good old ways (myself included) it is a big downer. but as much as we'd like good old 11 back, the only way we'd get it is to sadly go back to said 11 and ask for them to bring it back. Not go to a new game.
