But I think that's part of the problem: the game as it's set up now funnels people entirely towards hard core end-game content: endless dungeon runs for gear, hard mode primals and Coil.

If the game was aiming for casual friendly, PvP should've made it in the initial release, along with a casual raid. I know these are coming in 2.1 but everything about 2.0 seemed focused on hard core players. Those players are probably getting burned out by so much repetitive content, while casuals feel like they're done when they finish the story and are then asked to farm endlessly for a raid they'll never do.
