Actually they are a dps class... one that has access to very limited, very temporary buffs that significantly lower dps while using them. There is no such thing as a support class in ffxiv... many other classes have support buffs or debuffs as well.

It's a support class. No raid group can exist without a bard because white mages cannot exist without mana song. Even Scholars will run oom in either Turn 4 or Twintania.

These are not "limited buffs". These are mandatory features.

It is a dps class that has support abilities. Every dps class has support to some degree, just that bards take the largest hit to dps when they use theirs.

the reason why there is no coil without bard is because in this game no silence = instant wipe. Change that mechanic and we will see. Also the only place where my healer need mana is at the last phase of turn 4. So your "you cant run without song" is like "you cant down titan heart without limitbreak"

Last part of turn 4 requires BRD ballad untill you have te gear to do it without it. We are doing it without it every time now

Paladins can this is true, they are usually back up when the brd messes up. However, in fairness to monks, requiring a specific form really makes their silence sketchy.

It is easy to predict when they need to silence, but still it is a huge drain on their dps, which is really their strong suit.

It is good for learning content just as a SMN rez is or apparently as good as a BLM sleep is now in turn 5. But yeah, lets just claim bards support is the only support.
