i get what your saying but most people aren't taking this as a pre alpha excuse because it was confirmed that it was a decision to take out these animations. and what got me most worried is that even though there is this huge thread about it and the smaller other thread about this, the dev team or community reps have not responded.

if it was simply something like "its not implemented yet because its still early stages" then someone would have been able to tell us easily and just left a quick
" hey guys sorry your all disappointed with the lack of animations but the team does have it scheduled to implement these back into the game but because of time and other tasks they were not able to be in the early gameplay videos you have all seen, but they are scheduled to be in before release so please dont worry"

but because they haven't said anything like this it tells me that this was not planned to come back and they are taking the time to give us a decision about whether to implement these back based on the schedule, and of course that takes along time to review. that's just my assumption but at the very least it would not take a huge amount of time to tell us if it was just a misunderstanding, which means its not

And (no offense) why should my char not be able to step backwards ("back pedal")? Some people in here mentioned GW2, having quiet good animations. in GW2 it is also possible to "back pedal" and in many other MMorpgs, too. i played many mmorpgs. and some of them had focus on pvp.

in RL i can also "back pedal" ... while doing sports.. tennis, squash, fencing.. so why it shouldnt be possible? how would you fight with a rapier or a sword in your hand? would'nt you take some steps back sometimes also? not it is even more realistic this way.

The question is: Will these 2.0 Animations be better than 1.0 Animations? Who knows at this point ( because Pre-alpha is hardly to go by), people can say its a downgrade all they want, Devs can say its a downgrade all they want. What it really boils down to is, "your personal Preference".

it should be possible but i think changing almost the entire game just so pvp is possible is a bad decision, or at least not one that i like.
back pedaling is fine but only where its needed, like the current version that its only really used when your targeting something seems fine and having it force me to backpedal all the time even out of combat isnt what i want.
or have it in the camera settings to switch camera = character lock on or off
that would be a simple solution

I'm sure many of you have beaten "To kill a Raven" but I have not. Could it be because my party members are so dazzled by their character animations? I'm going to guess they don't even notice them. LOL.

This thread, all 1000+ posts, is silly. Well it mostly silly, though I've seen some very mean spirited comments. You people are arguing for the sake of arguing. Change is good. And remember, VOTE OBAMA! Oh wait not THAT mean spirited (politics is *real* ugly) LOL.

i think its not only because of pvp. they want to attract players who are used to MMorpgs, players which they lost very fast right after the release.. i think the most clientele that stayed have been players who already enjoyed ff11 which was also a very "blocky" MMorpg. dont get me wrong i enjoyed that game. but im looking forward to that, what Yoshida is going to do with FF14 now. driving it now into a new FF Online era it seems.

this can be bad or good. but i think FFXIV ARR will still offer his own feeling. thats why im looking forward to test it myself.

hopefully ARR is pushing the FF Online franchise into a better standard

i agree with that, i played ffxi also and its what got me here into ffxiv. but i did notice with most changes they showed off in ARR they also mentioned it was because of pvp. like the tp regen thing and the combo system change, and when i first heard it i was like ok i dont really mind that change, the tp thing is kinda cool but after hearing a few times that it was because of pvp i started to dislike the reason for the change, but the change itself isnt bad. but still this camera thing just seems like another change for pvp to me.
    getting alittle off topic lol
im cool with most of the changes but not with taking out what was good in the original, the animations were great and its not beneficial to take them out
in some ways all these changes are making them look like all the other mmos, and in some ways it still retains its own uniqueness, keeping that polished animations is one thing that needs to be kept in to separate it from the other games

Is the real concern, they said remove. Not temporary dissable, remove.
I keep telling him to read the thread...

They're not tiny. If the running animation of a character was made out of 5 parts...

    1) Gaining momentum
    2) Actual running
    3) Inertia on stopping
    4) Leaning left and right
    5) Changing direction more than 90 degrees

Now it only has 1 part, the actual running.

That's why they were so great, setting this game apart from others.

And that's why we're going to miss them. At least 80% of the game-time in an MMO is watching a character run. Even between fights, you run. Having to look at a character that moves so stiff is a turn off for many.

You might not be so bothered now, because the majority of other MMO's don't have movement animation of such quality, but the truth is that the animation model that they intend to use for 2.0 is already outdated. GW2 is not suppose to be the epitome of innovation when it comes to animation and immersion, and yet its movement animation includes things like inertia.

So in terms of movement animation, we went from FFXIV 1.0 >>>>>> GW2 to GW2 > FFXIV 2.0

FFXIV is suppose to be incredibly future-proof, and having an already outdated movement animation is, in my opinion, detrimental to the game.

You know I've been half following this so I honestly don't know if anyone has mentioned this yet.... and this is just something that I'm point out not to be spiteful or anything like that or to try to argue but to put in a different point of view. Has anyone thought that maybe they're doing it as well for the ps3 players that will be running on lower settings than some of the pc users? (don't agree with me take what i'm saying with a grain of salt because i was just thinking about that) They will have less memory and graphics cards compared to most of the pc players. *shrugs* just a thought I had on it nothing more nothing less
