And engaging in actually creative and fun mechanics.
Memorizing fights is part of all roles. Optimization always requires intimate knowledge of the fight, the boss' timers and your own timers to get everything lined up nicely and react to the mechanics in the best way possible.
For healers that obviously means knowing when the tankbusters and raid-wides hit so you can counter them with your oGCDs accordingly and spreading them in a way that makes sense but doesn't leave them sitting for too long either. Sure, you can also just skip memorizing the fight and yolo-heal it and it will likely get you through most of the fights without anyone dying but that's no different from a DPS who skips memorizing the fight and spends way more time running to and fro, suffering signifcant dps loss because of it or uses his raid support poorly and have it vaporize because of back-to-back mechanics, causing even more dps loss.
And that's not just a bit of dps nobody cares about anyway safe for some elitists who want nice parses, it's this dps loss that may cause wipes on the hard dps checks.
You are free to play however you want and just have your fun but the farther you get, the more you need to memorize fights and know when to use which skill.

The one thing that made me quit healing though is having to focus on something so incredibly boring. I'm all for healers dpsing and I would enjoy it if only it wasn't this incredibly boring one button spam...DPS just feels so much more busy, even classes that are said to be stupidly simple like RDM or DNC. They all have their rotations/ priority systems you need to follow, sure. But getting everything to work out as best as possible while doing mechanics? That's where the fun starts.
