Larboard isn't "slightly archaic", it's very archaic. Even the dictionary lists it as an archaic, unused term.

That being said, the only reason I know what port and starboard mean is because I'm a sailing enthusiast and was in Boy Scouts. They are certainly not "perfectly normal" words every educated person should know.

Now that's not to say the game shouldn't have "interesting" language like port and starboard. But using ridiculously outdated vocabulary wasn't a good design decision.

Things I have never been on: A boat.

Places I have heard starboard: Anything referring to boats in a historical sense. Most every sci fi TV series involving ships of the sea or space variety. Most every TV show set in ye olde times. Law and Order. Pirates of the Caribbean. Literally everywhere.

Places I have heard larboard: ff14.

Number of times it took to realize larboard means the opposite of starboard: 1.

    Yeah, same.

I don't really know why people are having such difficulty with it. Maybe it's the flipping that throws them off? But I find that that makes it EASIER for me. If its the same? Move to the other side. Is it the other one? Stay where you are.

The hardest part of it for me is if I'm not paying attention and notice it too late, but that goes for everything in this game.

The odd thing about that complaint is that the game has bosses that literally have names for their attacks, and knowing those names allow you to dodge appropriately. Larboard/Starboard couldve been called Bacon/Eggs and youd still have to learn what they mean for the attack, just like other bosses. Immediate example: Rams Voice, Dragon's Voice from the lvl 38 Chimera in Cutters Cry.
