Larboard is admittedly slightly archaic, but starboard is a perfectly normal word that every educated person should be familiar with. And once you know what starboard means it is kind of obvious from context what larboard must mean.Left and right wasn't too bad in other content. But using out of date terms causes more confusion I feel then just using left right up or down. You can look at the boss and adjust with the simple words everyone will know, it's a risk to use outdated terms cause not everyone will be on the up and up. Like me... I NEVER heard the starboard and whatever EVER until that boss. And it still bucks me up. I really wish Koji will just go back to using LEFT and RIGHT. Like PLEASE.
I was worried someone would say that... Nothing in my life lead me to that word tho. Nothing. I was in the army for 8 years. did some college etc etc. And none of that... none used that word. Again I never heard of that word until Omega. Again... left right up and down is prefectly normal and everyone uses those. Why use something so out of left field when you can use something EVERYONE knows?
While I can understand your point of view. I think it's a matter of associating names with behavior. It shouldn't matter what the names are or if you've heard of them or if they're made up once you see what they do.I was worried someone would say that... Nothing in my life lead me to that word tho. My first point was when I first got into that fight I got tripped up along with other people - it IS a meme- cause most people never heard of it before. If it had been left right etc etc that confusion would've never happened. That's my only point. Why have that there at all? That's all I'm saying. Yes after you do it a million times it's blargh but that first time tho. There's no reason to not use the common words like left.
Laughs and memes came out of it, so I'd say it's a win.My first point was when I first got into that fight I got tripped up along with other people - it IS a meme- cause most people never heard of it before. Because the localization team tries to replicate the Japanese usage of naval term (although they've used port before so I don't know why they use larboard now).My first point was when I first got into that fight I got tripped up along with other people - it IS a meme- cause most people never heard of it before. Honestly they probably wanted to A.) Do something a little different since there had been quite a few different "Left side/Right side" attacks by this point, and B.) Really wanted to show how old Omega was that it was still using such old terms. Urianger would approve.
Define what you would call "educated" exactly? Plenty of educated people can go through life and just not know certain terms, so let's not be bringing some kind of superiority in to the thread here.
There is that boss in the Temple of the Fist that users Fore/Alt and Port/Star terms, if they kept the latter for Omega perhaps players would have picked up the fight a little easier rather than just throwing Larboard out of nowhere. I suppose it starting with L means people could reference it easier to Left (side), though unless SE intends to use that extact term again then players may forget it once more.

I have a bachelor's degree in English, working my way up to a master's, and I've never heard of the term larboard until this fight. I don't think it's necessarily a matter of if you're 'educated' or not. I like to think I'm a relatively decent player, and that fight is the one fight I'll die over and over again in, and I say that with no shame.

Hun, i don't think the issue isn't being educated or not. I think the issue is that, just like me you don't speak old "boat". That's a whole different lingo >.<I have a bachelor's degree in English, working my way up to a master's, and I've never heard of the term larboard until this fight.
