I think regarding the comment the 'male bunnies are weird', part of me thinks it's regarding the whole idea that the male would look like the female. The female is slender, sexy and busty. You look at them, and obviously, the first thing you think is 'catwalk creamer' not 'warrior'.
Male Viera has distinct lore that makes them for lack of a better word 'hardcore badasses'. They are extreme in regards to survival. I can't think of one other race in FF lore that has a history that is more 'Damn' in regards to how they live than the males.
At the age of 13, they're taken away from their loving mothers, sisters, aunts etc. - a warm community. They're then thrown into the wild and looked over by a male Viera who has been trained to live alone, hunt alone and survive at all costs. Only the strongest of males who have reached master can breed after all, so any male who picks up the jack kit is going to be creme of the crop.
Anyway, the small child is then raised by someone who is distant and knows that they are likely to die. A parallel to this? Anyone seen DBZ where Picollo takes Gohan and forces him through that horrid training regime?
Not exactly the best of life. For decades they're trained to survive by this elder male, for which most don't survive the training - and even less survive the right of passage that gives them the title 'master'.
Now they're masters and can seek out their seclusion. To fight alone, shun all others and be extremely fierce and cold-blooded warriors.
Does this imagery paint cuteness?
I have to ask; reading this, is the image you paint in your head someone who is small, adorable and thin? Or the opposite; fierce looking, a scowl on the face, determined to do the job yet disengaged from it and a body sculpted from years of training, hunting their food; surviving from the meat of their kills, leather and furs for their clothes? Scars and long hair, a look of a man who would rather kill you than talk to you - that's what I can imagine when I read into the lore. The women are elegant; the men are almost feral.
This is what I think Yoshida wants, and this is where the difficulty comes of trying to create that and yet keep them close enough to their female counterpart.

I think this also could have been tied into the bunny outfit out of respect for the male Viera. It's fine on the females, cute and adorable, or strong and athletic. While for the males who are wearing, most of the time it's to look cute and flamboyant.
Again, speculation. But I can see why he would think the idea is weird if he's going by lore and wants to follow that in terms of just how they are. How their appearance should also be a product of how they were raised - this, of course, doesn't include those who are going to RP their own histories and all that doesn't include the harshness of the wood.
And if its simply him thinking they're weird because rabbit + male = ew wtf. Then wth Yoshi?
