Don't run away. Run to the side. Find the gaps. Melee range has a 5 yalm reach, which is larger than would be expected. The GCD is ~2.5s. Combined, that's quite a large distance that needs to be covered to prevent being able to use a weaponskill on every gcd. It's extremely rare in trash pulls for there to be anything large enough to warrant running out of range long enough to lose even part of a gcd. Toads are the only thing that really comes to mind.
