Jack of all trades doesn't fit into the trinity, so gl with that.I don't care what RDM is actually like, there is literally no way to mess it up as long as they stick to the basic idea of the class, a jack or all trade style. It's basically what makes RDM an RDM. Be kinda hard for them to mess it up, even for Square.
As for Sam, that is another story. I see it just being a Dark style with more focus on the sword then the dark magic. I don's see it being like the Sam we remember in FFXI. In my opinion THAT is the Job we need to worry about.
I'd be good with that. but it begs the question then, would an RDM's basic skills (since from what you said might be are mostly melee) be under Slash or a Piercing style? If its a slash then linking to a Nin early on would be best play.I forgot where but I remember early interview said Red Mage Focus on Range Combat during early stage of the leveling process and then in later stage near Max level it begins earning their Melee Skills for the Melee Mechanic.
So Red Mage stays true to its nature as a Range DPS Job with the main focus is the Range attacks with Melee being the "after" skills once Range Rotation is over.
If I have to guess we're maybe looking at level 50 to 60 for Range Combat and then as we level in Stormblood for level 61 to 70 that is maybe when we get our Melee Skills.
I had no interest in playing MCH until I tried it since it seemed the most interesting out of the three new jobs. Edit: I guess that means I had some interest but really juggling turrets and managing them did not sound like fun at all
This time, I'm looking forward to trying RDM so I hope that doesn't mean that the opposite'll happen
Problem might be is, if people got used to playing a job in a certain way then you add something that changes the playstyle at higher levels, people might not like it. And would prefer to stick to the way they have been playing at lower levels. But I assume most people know what to expect from RDM.
"BAAAAAARD!" - 2018
Man, what is your issue with Machinists?
Let's be real here: Early impressions made people think "BRD with a gun and a pet", they approached it like BRD, expecting the simplicity of it, but found a more technical ranged job and simply didn't understand the job immediately, then shyed away from it, especially with talk of how "weak" MCH was initially. PLUS there was FAR more hype for Dark Knight anyways, so that didn't help it any. MCH was never bad, people's expectations were simply below what was offered, and the transition was a tough one for many.
That aside, if you're looking forward to SAM, expect it to play like a melee. Set rotation(s), a few CC abilities, and you know there's a skill with a cast time. It's not that bad, just consider it a long animation before the hit. They said it's more similar to Monk than Ninja, if anything, but don't try to play it like either of those.
If you're looking forward to RDM, first off, leave XI's RDM behind. You're NOT getting that here. You're getting a ranged magic DPS with some gap closers and melee attacks. Learn and adapt. Staying at range isn't always what you do, nor what you've done all this time. Simply adjust to learn when and where to utilize your gap closers/melee skills.
And seriously, don't be afraid or shy away from a job just because it's technical. A little effort and practice is what it takes to be good at any job.

Well, I can say I'll drop Samurai like a hot potato the moment they get a Gauss Scabbard.
I don't like to prepare myself for overhype or underhype anything. That's sort of thing is what keeps people from trying something out without any sense of wonder.
If we could save the doom and gloom for when the class actually arrives AND gets tried out instead of setting itself up for failure because MCH wasn't up to some people's expectations, that would be just swell.
Samurai reminds of WoW rogue, you built up something then you unleash it via another skill. I think Samurai will be fine. Its Red Mage that makes me curious, since this Red Mage wont be a hybrid role, so what does this mean for the white magick side of the Red Mage?
I lost a lot of enthusiasm for RDM as soon as they mentioned it was going to be a ranged caster. They had all the opportunity in the world to make RDM something unique to this game: a melee-ranged caster, with spells, abilities, and sword-based melee attacks tailored to fighting on the front lines, but chose instead to give us yet another ranged caster on top of the two we already have.
For those concerned about RDM crowding the melee in the party, sadly I don't think this will be the case, much as I'd LIKE to have RDM full-time up-front. The videos showing RDM dashing in for melee attacks gave no impression that they STAY up front for any length of time. I suspect it will be much like DRG jumps - lunge in, stabby stabby stabby, leap back, all part of a single action, and there for the sole purpose that RDM doesn't look silly for holding their iconic rapier and never using it.
Those concerned about RDM being a jack-of-all-trades - you should be. RDM will be ranged magic DPS. It will not be a competent healer or tank. The best we can hope for is that RDM might be given a minor healing ability as a nod to their past role in Final Fantasy wrangling both White and Black magic.
I'm here complaining about the function of a job that's not even out yet, I fully acknowledge that. It's possible I may even be impressed by the job, once Stormblood is actually released - it may even be fun. Right now, though, given the information we've been given, my expectations for RDM are absolutely rock bottom. I have no interest in playing it (though I will, since I like to level all jobs to max), and it looks to me like SE was not willing to push any boundaries with this new job.
It's kind of the opposite situation as Machinist for me, really - I was totally pumped for MCH when I heard about it, and my expectations were high. What we eventually got, though, was almost a carbon-copy clone of BRD. That soured my enthusiasm for a while, and Gauss Barrel was the nail in the coffin that made me turn away from the job completely. (Wanderer's Minuet did the same for me and BRD, actually - what a wretched turn for both jobs to take.)

people were hyped for musketeer since 1.0. until this day there is a musketeer guild in limsa and you can see NPCs training with guns. and then we got machinist instead of musketeer. people wanted a pirate themed gun class, not a new flavoured bard.
i don't even remember any hype for machinist. it all was DRK and later AST, MCH had no hype at all and i don't even saw many right after 3.0 release...
even the horribly balanced AST was played far more at all times than MCH... so it's not that MCH was "too weak", it was the whole style and game design of the class.
