I've played all types of MMO's. P2P, B2P, F2P, P2W, Private Servers, with and without cash shops, etc. With FFXIV I have no problem with Mogstation as long as it stays vanity/non Pay to Win. Time's change and I've accepted that. I have a line I hope SE does not cross, and from what we've seen, they're still pretty far away from it.
Playing some catch up here, sorry for not acknowledging earlier. D:

One thing that makes me almost OK with the cash shop is the fact that SE as a company had not been doing well financially in recent years. XIV ARR has been great for them, but just because you finally get one financial success does not mean that the company as a whole is completely in the clear (although last I read they're doing OK now). A business has to make money, I totally get that and am 100% OK with it.

As I've mentioned a couple of times, my first MMO experience was XI which did not have a cash shop, and I guess that's just how I expected things to be. Not related to XIV, I also loathe DLC in other games as well. I've been a huge Sims fan and have played it since the very beginning with their first release. Now all the later versions have a massive cash shop to buy extra content, and I hate it! It feels like they purposefully withheld content so that they could make you buy it back at a later date. Slightly different as Sims is not a sub game, and they've always sold "items packs", so I hope no one claims this to be some solid argument. :P I know how these forums work!

As someone mentioned a bit earlier, SE is actually toying with the idea of a leveling potion. At what point do they draw the line? We all have our threshold for what we feel is acceptable, and maybe some of the pro-cash shop people will switch sides at that point. Hopefully it won't cross that line at all, but we'll see. XIV is designed to be casual, and those types of items do fit in with that model.
