SWEET BABY JESUS! LET IT GOOOOOO LET IT GOOOOOOO CAN"T HOLD BACK ANYMORRREEEEE!!!!
To clarify my thoughts on the matter, since the last half of this thread has been a gigantic mess:
1) IMO, a P2P MMO should not have a cash shop outside of account services (fantasia, name change, server change, etc). I feel it is double-dipping your paying customers. XI managed fine, why can't XIV?
I get that times change, and perhaps I just need to accept that even P2P MMOs will now have cash shops (much like the hated DLC in other games). Perhaps that is the new way, but it does not mean that I have to agree with the practice.
Since the cash shop is here to stay, I would have liked to see it implemented in the following way:
2) Have items be obtainable in-game at some point before moving them to the cash shop. Give your players the chance to do an event to get the item instead of making items cash-shop exclusives. This would make it feel much less like a cash grab and that items are intentionally being withheld from the game.
Obviously none of us will know the thinking behind SE's decision to place exclusive items in the cash shop. Would these have gone to game if it didn't exist? Would they have even bothered creating the items if they couldn't sell it? Who bloody knows. The "why" does not change the overall feel to me.
My usual disclaimer - this is not including promotional events/items such as fan fest, RL plushies, OST cds, etc.
I am not sure about the current situation because i have been away for a long time, but for many years, XI had very little in the realm of glamours, costumes, customization and personalization.
Yes, XI did not have a cash shop, but it also did not have a lot of things that today are a staple and we take for granted.
So while it is true that an XI sub granted you access to all there was XI related, "all there was" was much smaller in content than what we see today.
I would say that XI definitely has at least as many events as XIV, maybe more (would need to scour announcements on this one). I actually still play XI, and at this point I would say their collection of event gear is pretty massive. Granted part of this does come with being around for 13 years, but they have always steadily released new costumes and event items. Also, they now have a glamour system so this is no longer stuck being town gear only.
They also have started releasing new mounts in-game. The styles are obviously vastly different from XIV, but I think it's cool that we still get new items to this day.
Anyway, no real point here, just elaborating a bit.

Mmmm When XI was at it's peak glamour or fluff wasn't really wanted or considered needed by the community. The only reason i use glamour really is to hide gear i don't like. I remember hating subligars combined with doublets during leveling in xi because the doublet would hide the subligar making you look like you had no clothes down under. But it was a minor inconvenience, i don't have the motivation to go out collecting glamour items like a number of peeps in my ls' do. The furthest i've gone is to glamour my BLM gear to a Classic BLM look.I would say that XI definitely has at least as many events as XIV, maybe more (would need to scour announcements on this one). Yoshi's stated he'd rather shut the game down entirely than let it go f2p, so regardless of the cash shop and any impact it has now or may have in the future, the game is very unlikely to be anything but pay to play.
That's....weird no ?
I mean, if it goes F2P at some point (if one day there is not enougth regular incomes) they could always make a little money out of a F2P FF14, why would they close it ? oO
Plus, not sure Yoshida's boss would ask his permission to make it F2P (I suppose he has a boss even as producer or at least investors he has to cop with ? )

People don't know how to take criticism anymore, and bad play is rewarded with with a coddling mentality. Yes, this is a casual game for the most part - that doesn't mean people need to walk on eggshells in fear of getting reported for pointing out things. This whole 'please don't say anything even slightly negative' mentality that we seem to be going towards and the devs seemingly pushing towards it is creating a disturbing trend.

I can't find or remember when/what interview he said it in, but it was a good while ago (over a year or two? Not sure). I think it was based on the usual issues that come up for f2p games (lack of content, toxic atmosphere, lower quality of game design in general), but I can't recall Yoshi's exact words. Just that he basically did say "I'd rather shut the game down than let it go f2p".That's....weird no ?

Frankly, I'm in agreement with his stance. F2p games are kinda trash - if not immediately, then a year down the road. (Saying this as someone who used to be solely a f2p player who then came to this game as my first subscription MMO >>)
Also, doubt we'd ever go f2p just because even as old as it is and how few people play it any longer, FF11 is still a sub-based game despite the fact it's been put into perma-maint mode. So -shrug-

Im hating this mount extremily, imagine multiple FAT asses with tiny pig feet on your whole screen when rushing to S rank spawn. While huge mount is ok when the actual body of mount is under the rider and ingame physics doesnt clutter your viewing area with said mounts animations in your face. But those obesse shitholes swiveling in your face as mount user does his movement inputs is realy disgusting to me personaly.
If only they would change the model of that fatass to be something more like huge muscular moogle and not this overblown ready to die from gangrene parody, because flowers and seating chair is cute tho.....
