    From the tank perspective if we were to stick to Fending gear of the 2 Samurai is already a more viable and easy addition to tanking role. Yet since the SAM class is usually crit based it's more likely to be a physical tank in mainly the OT role. Or just flat DPS.

    Red Mage IMO would make an interesting new additional as a Mage Tank but if this is not possible then I suspect it will be a Caster or Healer that will use INT/MND or both as it's attack stat.

    He said he sees it more as a DPS. He never said it wouldn't be a tank.

    I mean, having different gear for each tank could be annoying, but DPS players already have to deal with that. It would be a minor inconvenience, sure, but not a good enough reason to force every single tank into the same gear.

    I don't see it as an inconvenience but as a much needed variation. This needs some serious fresh air, like, yesterday.

    Not so much 'DPS'... but melee DPS have to deal with this. This was just the foundation SE has built with gears, and I can say for sure there will be more jobs in the foreseeable future that will use Maiming,Striking and Scouting.

    Just some thoughts I had on this topic. In regards to the OP talking about the possibility of making SAM be both the tank and dps in the expansion in the form of Shogun and Ronin, I think that's a horrible idea. The main reason being that means one iconic job is taking up two slots, when one of them could be given to another iconic FF job. Personally, I'd rather see SAM as a dps for the main reason of wanting a new tank to do a different kind of damage instead of slashing, preferably blunt so MNK can have a friend.

    Although if they were to go about making SAM a tank and a dps, my thoughts on design for them would be something like making the Shogun wield both a katana(slashing) and yumi(piercing) as their weapons, possibly split into 2 different items. When tanking the Shogun uses the katana and will have access to their defensive cooldowns in the form of counters. The way counters would work is that the Shogun would take a stance disabling their ability to use actions for let's say 5 seconds. When the SAM gets attacked, they reduce the damage and follow up with a counter attack ending the stance. Each counter move would have special type of attack it worked against, primarily physical or magical damage, and if they counter that specific attack than their counter attack gets stronger while giving them a defensive buff. When they switch to the yumi they'd have access to ranged combo and more offensive oGCD abilities. Another thought for Shogun would be to give them something similar to the banners that warriors from guild wars 2 have.

    As a Ronin, they would also use a katana(slashing), but it would be combined with the sheath into 1 item just to keep their katana separate from Shoguns. For Ronin, I'd see their default stance when in combat be that quick draw style where their katana is still sheathed. While it may sound weird, I could actually see Ronin working as a pseudo support dps class. The two main things about them would be that they would have high mobility in the form of short dashes between their gcd and ogcd abilities allowing them to get around the battlefield while still attacking enemies. For some gcd abilities that do that, I could see them having a positional bonus like going from flank to rear with the move or something like that. Their support would mainly come in the style of Draw Out/Iaido that the samurais from tactics had, giving them aoe abilities that could support their allies or debuff their enemies.

    Pretty much. Let's be realistic here. SAM is gonna have like 3 or 4 unique armors for it's class. And it's all gonna be either one of the three we already have. FFXIV is unique in that has the armory system. We can be every class at once. But it's limited in the fact that it has no skill trees or diversity in it's classes. Especially with tanks and healers thanks to the "safe by the books" MMO trio of Tank, healer, DPS. Which FF classes have never been balanced around.

    Exactly. FF's strengths have always been in it's diversity. The fact that people can only see tanks in fending gear is either a narrow viewpoint of the playerbase, or a narrow viewpoint of the development team.
