However, I've known many people who identify as elitist, in so much that they prefer to play with similarly skilled and dedicated players, that are kind and helpful and never rip into new players. You assume you've only met asshole elitists because likely they are the most vocal. The kind ones tend to keep quiet and you have no idea you even met them. This creates a distinct confirmation bias that your post displays.
That right there betrays the reason for your confirmation bias. Also try to remember that the human brain has a distinct tendency to remember negative experiences more than positive ones. It's a survival instinct. However, that doesn't make it accurate.
