That would also destroy Uldah if people just leave. There's rumors floating about the city so it's likely some people are letting some things slip, but I mean... You live in ul'dah with your family, you do business in ul'dah. You watch a member of the syndicate point out the warrior of light and the scions as assassins, and then that same syndicate member get murdered by *another* syndicate member, and then *that* one gets an arm lopped off and thrown in jail. And then Lolorito's henchmen tell you to keep your mouth shut about the entire ordeal? Odds are pretty good you keep quiet, as you're making plans to get your ass out of the city with anything you care about for a long, long vacation, because holy shit is that above your pay grade and not something you want to get in the middle of.
I doubt they believe the nonsense, both Limsa and Gridania know the WoL and Scions are innocent. They've already taken measures in their own lands and extradited the crystal braves from their cities. There are only two ways for them, to avoid worse (like the empire taking over Uldah):
1) Solve this dilemma and serve justice, which means, that the real murder and all the string-pullers have to be found and "eliminated", probably followed by the Sultana's plan.
2) Accept it and cancel the alliance with Uldah - and attack them together and with full force, if they try to ally with the empire (or any other foreign force), before it can send troops.
It is still not in there place to interfere with Ul'dahn internal affairs, no matter how unjustified it seems. Without hard evidence, if they were to try and cry wolf to the citizens of Ul'dah all they have working for them are rumors. (Even though we know its true)
If civil war does break out in Ul'dah, the most probable course of action is to 'aid' the faction that fights the Monetarists.
Expelled, I'd say, rather than extradited ("the official process whereby one country transfers a suspected or convicted criminal to another country").
I don't think we know yet if this was an action on the part of Limsa and Gridania or whether the Crystal Braves have been consolidated in Uldah (plus a few in Revenant's Toll). At least the First and Third are effectively part of the Syndicate's own army, along with the Brass Blades.
First off, I want to say that I really enjoyed the story of 2.55 and how it tied everything together to go into Heavensward. It felt exciting and compelling, and was a good wrap-up overall. That being said, I thought a number of things about the events didn't really add up or make much logical sense.
Aside from Nanamo's plan to curb syndicate power making little sense to me, I felt the whole coup orchestrated by the monetarists was either poorly executed or poorly thought out.
Why would they frame the Scions in the first place? Especially the WoL--they're literally the savior of the realm (and have been for countless occasions). Who would actually believe they're behind this? Especially when the syndicate is known to be corrupt/greedy and has the motive to commit such an act. It makes no sense. I doubt they would sway many people against the Scions. This does nothing but hurt their credibility. It would have made much more sense to do this quietly, not in the middle of the Victory Feast? Teledji announced to a whole room full of guests (including the LEADERS of the other city-states) that the Sultana was assassinated and then insults her her memory in front of everyone.
This is especially mindnumbing when the syndicate does a complete 180 and all of a sudden wants the Sultana's death to be "hush hush"? Ul'dah had huge raiding parties of Brass Blades and Crystal Braves scouring the streets for the WoL for "treason" and then right after the fact we can just freely walk back into Ul'dah like nothing transpired? Can it even be hushed? I don't think anything would stop people from hearing rumors of the sultana's "death", not with so many witnesses and soldiers involved. Furthermore, the syndicate does itself no favors by upsetting Limsa and Gridania. Even if they were to cooperate, they will probably always subtly work against them (or not so subtly--like we would).
Really it just seems like the syndicate set itself up for internal strife in a much greater magnitude, especially because it was carried out in such a cavalier manner. At this point, they seem like they just have everything to lose. They overplayed their hand. They even left Raubaun alive, which really won't help them much if things are going to stay quiet. My guess is Lolorito wanted something done more subtly and had always had been plotting more long term, but Teledji's actions rushed him and forced him to act more carelessly (hence his frustration or troubled countenance at the end).
Nanamo has been whispering/talking to the maiden, this was visually shown. Reason could be she and her are part of some more elaborate plan... or Nanamo told her the plans to push towards a democracy. To which the lady told the Syndicate and had to act immediately. Nanamo was going to make her grand statement at the dinner. Given they had to act then and there... couldn't wait to secure Omega or doing something more concrete... the Scions were there, the WoL were there, going to need some 'assassins' to show the public.
And Jubs would be frustrated too... if two seats in the Syndicate are now open, can't tell people the Sultana is dead without a scapegoat other than Raubahn (arena legend to the people and flame loyalty) since the WoL/Scions escaped. Who ever fills the open seats could be loyal to Scions/WoL. Killing Nanamo after her statement would be a whole lot more damning on the Syndicate than this mess.
We'll go with expelled, better choice of words.Expelled, I'd say, rather than extradited ("the official process whereby one country transfers a suspected or convicted criminal to another country").
I don't think we know yet if this was an action on the part of Limsa and Gridania or whether the Crystal Braves have been consolidated in Uldah (plus a few in Revenant's Toll). At least the First and Third are effectively part of the Syndicate's own army, along with the Brass Blades.
@Hillo: Nanamo's plan was to dissolve the syndicate/monarchy and place the Immortal Flames in charge of Ul'dah. This would undoubtedly caused a civil war within Ul'dah but with Limsa Lominsa and Gridania on their side they would have easily quelled it.
I think Teledji was most likely acting alone most likely. He wanted the WoL and Scions for some reason (to trade/sell to the Ascians/Garlean? To just off so they stayed out of his hair?) and obviously wanted Sultana out of his way. It seems probable that Lolorito's chiming in after Teledji split was simply him attempting damage control. Having the WoL/Scions captured at this point was just to keep them from letting everyone know the Sultana was dead until he found a solution to this problem (I can only assume that Lolorito didn't want her dead).
It could have been that we were just an easy target. They knew that the WoL would go to ridiculous lengths to help people, so it was very simple to just overhear Alianne's plan, take her out, plant a bottle, and wait. The plan might have even been conceived just hours before it happened, since the handmaiden knew that Nanamo wanted to talk to us personally about things that would harm the Syndicate.
And finger-pointing sorcery was easy too. I doubt many people know of the Echo (I mean, there's only three people in the canon who possess it right now), and Black Magic is outlawed in Ul'dah. Pretty simple to just shout, "WE CAUGHT THIS GUY POISONING PEOPLE SINCE HE AND THE SCIONS WERE HERE TO MANIPULATE US AAAAALLLLLL WITH ENCHANTMENTS AND SORCERYYYY" I mean, why are the Scions so caught up in the world's politics anyway? It MUST be that they're controlling us all! SEIIIIZE THEM!
Easy targets.
I dont understand why involving the WoL/Scions, why the should even care? We arent part of their policy, It would be like arresting the leaders of Limsa and Grindania. After all what the WoL and the Scions did and that I'm sure a lot of people would be on our side. There is something weird going on. Arresting the WoL/Scions, to what purpose? And that Rauuban is still alive, why it was not kill?
It would be interesting if Nanamo had a more elaborate plan with the hand-maiden. I personally think she could really still be alive.
As for the coup, if Nanamo's plan really was going to cut the syndicate from their influence, their hand was indeed forced. I agree that killing her after her speech would be a poor move as well. It might have been better for them to act sooner.
The scions are really the wrong scapegoat to use. I think the public would probably find out about the "deed" anyway. It seems that there are already rumors.
I believe Teledji acting alone with Lolorito attempting damage control makes the most sense. Even still, Lolorito came to be in on it--the Brass Blades are his after all. Their plan still seems haphazard at best. Thanks to Teledji's admission, a number of people are already aware of her fate, Scions aside. Plus we shouldn't be allowed to traipse around in Ul'dah if there's a giant manhunt for the WoL and they suddenly want to keep things a secret (even our accusations).
As for the dissolution of the monarchy, I think the syndicate could have had ample room to work within the new republic system. Their money and influence would survive in some fashion I would think.
