That's not elitism, he was trying to help him so in the future... maybe, just maybe... he could down content that has the real nice gear. It's completely asinine to believe this is what elitism is, it's not him playing how he wants, it's him just playing badly. Sorry, but most MMO's I have played there was a certain optimal set up that was just more choice over the others whether it be gear, rotation or skill points. You would have to be completely tuned out if you couldn't tell his DPS was bad. Your combat log tells you what skills he is using, and your own skill level would tell you if he was playing the class right. It doesn't take much to know what your team is doing. That is part of what being "Elite" is about. Knowing your team, and knowing all the classes well enough to know when they aren't pulling their weight.

So, if I joined a party with you on my tank it would be ok for me to use caster gear for "more flashes and stoneskins" and to auto attack one mob at a time, ignoring the rest? Because that may be how I want to play that day. to quote "I pay my fee I'll play as I want".

Or maybe I want to stand at the back and let others tank and spam cure on my PLD.

AS long as everyone doesn't die over and over again i could not give to shits what u do to be honest with you lol. If that's how you play and it works for you and it has work in the past cause u have fully tested it out good for you. But i wouldn't start complaining at u tilling you to get a flipping clue and learn how to do ur job right like i see people do to other people. It should definitely matter as any person who joins into a dungeon is expected by the majority to pull their own weight.

I may have missed a comment so your sentence may be taken out of context. But, shouldn't there be some level of expectation? I mean, yes, at level 15, the first dungeon is Satasha. As any of the classes, I don't really expect you to go out of your way to be the MVP. However, if you queue up in anything post level 50. I should never have to question your fundamental skills. All black mages know to use fire III and then spam fire I, unless they need to AOE. Then when their MP is low, they swap to Blizzard III, and use Blizzard I until full mp, and then back to Fire. (All other skills can be fine tuned and put into rotation) But the basic fundamentals are the same. If you cannot even do that, then should I be penalized by your (not yours per say XD) lack of skill and understanding of a role which you decided to not only take to 50 (for achievement) but to continue on and do dungeons with?

It is indeed very simple. The majority of people go and do DR/DF/PF and expect a baseline in terms of performance.
I have said this before. Many people here do not expect perfection or anywhere near such. Even slacking off is fine with me. Is it wrong to expect the bare minimum when you go into DF or PF or any group for a dungeon?

If people are new I often take the time to explain the fights and layout of the dungeon so they know ahead of time so they may perform fine.
I also give advice to people and if they take it wrong, i often apologize and reiterate that i meant no offense.
Is that wrong and what do you expect if you enter a DR/DF/PF?

When you queue through Duty Finder without having a full group? No, never. It's pointless. With those expectations in DF people tend to hurt themselves more often than not.
If you use PF then yes have expectations, the ones you placed.
