Considering the devs commited the biggest no-no of designing "elite" content (attaching a story element instead of leaving Extreme modes as purely shiny/e-peen-based content), I think people have a right to be upset to a degree. I doubt we'd be having these issues if extreme modes was something you unlocked after clearing coil or something with no quest requirements. Just "clear coil => Garuda Extreme unlocked", with EM's having their own loot tables that are not recycled weapons with better stats and perhaps maybe a shiny after beating all three that is only marginally better than coil gear.
I managed to skip out of hard modes in WoW because they were not required to progress the story (Algalon in Ulduar and Sinestra in Bastion of Twilight being exceptions), so I often left hard modes to the e-peen-focused crowd because as far as I was concerned I could see the story by doing normal modes and that was enough for me. Currently I have a quest on my tracker telling me to clear Garuda Extreme, so yes I feel I'm being pushed towards content, and when the content is not fun to a number of people, there's bound to be problems.

* The sad thing is that FFXIV turned RDM into a turret, and people think that's what it's supposed to be. It's supposed to combine sword and magic into something more, not spend the bulk of gameplay spamming spells and jump into melee for only 3 GCDs before scurrying back to the back line like good little casters.
* Design ideas:
Red Mage - COMPLETE (https://tinyurl.com/y6tsbnjh), Chemist - Second Pass (https://tinyurl.com/ssuog88), Thief - First Pass (https://tinyurl.com/vdjpkoa), Rune Fencer - First Pass (https://tinyurl.com/y3fomdp2)
