I'm not really sure how you can justify an argument that states "You are now less experienced than you were ten minutes ago because you are knocked out" I mean, normally (for immersion purposes) you would have more experience after an event like that, not less.

Yes we need some sort of incentive to not just Leroy Jenkins our way through the game but come on, less experience? it makes no sense.

Well lets say you break your arm, you'll need some time and exercise to get to the level where you were before.

Why can't the white mages just cure it all up? They can magically cure me when I'm getting my face pounded in by a giant dragon.

Saying that is trying to apply realistic logic to a fantasy game, which isn't realistic to begin with. One could argue that a player who gets knocked out is demonstrating their lack of skill and therefore gets demoted in a way if we were to go that route (which I wouldn't since like I said...). I still think it's funny people have no issue with the tedious nature of gear damage, but get all pissy over losing exp they can gain back by killing 2 monsters....

Applying realism to a Fantasy game is most certainly realistic. People just automatically conclude that once the game has something that's pure fantasy NONE of the game can be realistic, which is false. Some things it's not possible to be realistic, such as magic, but other things it is.

I personally have no issue with gear damage, or xp loss, or whatnot on death. As much as some types like to hate on them, they do serve a purpose.

You're right. But I question people who, like the person I was talking to, say you basically have to assume realistic logic in cases where it can be explained by do so.

The game is a fantasy game yes, that doesn't mean that you can't be realistic with alot of things. People have opinions about breast size and physics that make the game more realistic. Would you rather see the word "parry" or would you rather see your character actually parry with animation or both? it's all a matter of opinion and it's my opinion that losing experience isn't the best or most realistic way to penalize death. I don't see alot of people quoting actual character death and mandatory deletion comments.

All in all to me, gear damage represents a failure to block, parry dodge successfully enough to prevent death thus damaging your gear and thus giving crafts something meaningful to do besides grinding out endless things to level or make gil. This again is just a matter of opinion though, I respect everyone's opinion.

Perhaps it's psychological. "Your failure shows that you're not as experienced as you thought" where your skill thereafter would reflect your scared self esteem.
