do it like War Z did it for some time.
(and we're talking about 2012 here).
when you die you can't raise & play for 1 hour,
but you can buy instant raise for 1$ RL money.

Wow... that's a really cheap move. Nothing too surprising coming from this money grubbing gaming era, but still...
From what I can tell, players want what seems like the path of least resistance - whether it's only in their minds or not. Seems easier to get an NPC to repair your armor with a few clicks compared to having to gain exp again. People simply don't logically rationalize to themselves what's actually involved in each penalty. You'll have theidiotstypical end-game people saying "you shouldn't die so much that you need to repair your gear all time". Dying and regaining XP is usually free, dying and repairing your gear a ton of time is far worse.
Seriously though, XIV has a far worse death penalty than most MMOs out there, but people defend it to the death. People say rift is still successful, it has death penalties. Guild Wars 2 does/did as well but in a different format.
Funny, so much for a 1999 model.
Everyone says the times have changed. But for MMO's they really haven't. The people playing the games have changed, that's all.

Applying realism to a Fantasy game is most certainly realistic. People just automatically conclude that once the game has something that's pure fantasy NONE of the game can be realistic, which is false. Some things it's not possible to be realistic, such as magic, but other things it is.Saying that is trying to apply realistic logic to a fantasy game, which isn't realistic to begin with. One could argue that a player who gets knocked out is demonstrating their lack of skill and therefore gets demoted in a way if we were to go that route (which I wouldn't since like I said...). I still think it's funny people have no issue with the tedious nature of gear damage, but get all pissy over losing exp they can gain back by killing 2 monsters....
I personally have no issue with gear damage, or xp loss, or whatnot on death. As much as some types like to hate on them, they do serve a purpose.
You're right. But I question people who, like the person I was talking to, say you basically have to assume realistic logic in cases where it can be explained by do so.Applying realism to a Fantasy game is most certainly realistic. People just automatically conclude that once the game has something that's pure fantasy NONE of the game can be realistic, which is false. Some things it's not possible to be realistic, such as magic, but other things it is.

I also remember endless threads complaining about exp loss back in those days so no matter what you have for a penalty it either will be too much or not enough or something :P
