@Nix: Yeah a British friend and Australian where using it at me. But as a general American to American word I dont think its commonly used as friend, at least from my experience.
I know 4 languages and this is a tall order, how would one define feelings between 2 people which has not yet been given a meaning... I Slavic nothing exists to define feeling one man (or woman) has towards another, when there is NO bond of blood between the. Some one that can dissect languages would need to try there hand at this.
