Ingame weddings = More food for drama queens.

As if people don't already have enough drama in their shells without the weddings in the game...
Just don't even implement it at all!!
I wonder who was the first person to think of it at all.

Guy 1: "You know, i thought of something! what if we had players marry in the game!!!

Guy 2: Oh ok, what would the bonus from that be? what would the players that marry gain?

    Guy 1: NOTHING!

Guy 2: YESS!! LET'S GET TO WORK!

Actually, having no reward (or a symbolic reward, like rings and the wedding armor set.) ensures that people aren't getting wed for gaming rewards and advantages. Maintaining the purpose/decorum of the ceremony.

As for drama, well, its the internet. Anything truly worth a GMs time would have to be out there and past blacklisting.

I have no clue why this is an issue with people. It is a FANTASY game. Not real, no reflection to society "although i can fantasize" >^.^< If FFXIV allowed same sex marriage's would they really expect to be boycotted by millions of conservative Americans?? The simple answer is no it wouldn't happen the youth and the elderly who run this country are completely different and who do you think would be the target demography? whatever is decided for marriage wouldn't even get a mention on the news networks. Because it is FANTASY not real! I mean honestly if it was a huge deal for a religious belief be implemented on a fantasy game don't you think people that are (irrational argumentative "Insert religion") who would boycott the game would be playing a game with the Gods of Ezoria anyways?

bleh now the rant is over i guess i get it a little I just think that it's crazy fans are making an issue over it.

We are in Square Enix's world we play by their rules in their game. I personally respect whatever they implement because that is what they have decided for their FANTASY world.

Not to mention the people who do start "boycotting" and getting all pissed, conservative or not, are often those who don't even play video games lol. It's always the non-gamers that blow things way out of proportion. Not SE's audience, why should they matter?

It's funny that you see the dozens of pages but it's not as big an issue as it seems. Looking at the poll on page 1 and the responses, a vast majority of them are overwhelmingly either for or not against allowing it.

I... dislike how this topic has become a battleground. One of the main reasons I liked FFXI and love FFXIV is that the communities have always been so mature and well behaved. I never see people throwing around slurs and other offensive remarks in this group. An occasional nub/newb/whatever here and there, but never do I see people throwing around anything remotely offensive to who someone is. It saddens me that this issue has changed that... I honestly thought we were going to be better then that. I'm disappointed and sad at this change.
Personally, marriage in a video game isn't too important to me, sure if it's there why not my fiance and I play together might as well. Though in 2.0 we are both making boy characters this time which means we won't be able to which sucks a bit... I'm mostly sad because I for some reason had a higher opinion of the community.

I thought you were going to marry me . . ., I wanted to be Mr. Subligar too ! lol

And such a hot issue as homosexuality (which basically boils down to religion) is always a rough topic even in the mature audiences. I think in respect to that you still have hope - the fact that SE hasnt closed this thread yet means we arent doing too bad :P hehehe

I agree with what earlier people said. Marriage just shouldn't be in the game period. It really doesn't add a whole lot of good. Most of the time it just adds unnecessary drama to the game.

Here's an idea: If marriage will be implemented why not make it so that players can only marry npcs instead of other players. You can still have same-sex marriages(as long as it isn't like dragonage when your party members hate you because you don't swing that way lol). The roleplayers will be happy. No drama. Everybody wins!
I think they could add some sort of system where a player could marry a unique npc. Remember the fellow system in XI? Or even the Path companions.

Make it so that the player can choose the first and last name and what race and gender they want the npc to be, and then have th devs give a unique questline for each gender of each race. That would give enough variety to make the npc stories feel more unique than all of them no matter what gender and race having the same questline like the path companions.

Obviously the you would have to progress through their questline to actually make it possible to romance/marry them, but keep it optional so that if players just want an npc friend instead of a soulmate they can have that.

This imo is only way marriage can be implemented into an mmo without it turning into a disaster of a feature.
    What do you guys think?

Should I make a separate topic for this idea?

I see it from a business perspective. People who are opposed to same sex marriage generally are more volatile when they don't have their way.

Keeping marriage opposite-sex only: Very little loss in subscribers.

Adding same-sex marriage: Potentially thousands of subscribers lost.

Most people who are pro same-sex marriage would not react to opposite-sex only marriage in the same way people who are a anti same-sex marriage would react if same-sex marriage were to be added. Especially since same-sex marriage hasn't been entirely ruled out, giving proponents hope.

tl;dr the reaction by opponents of same-sex marriage is much more emotionally charged than the other way around.

The people who react so negatively and vocally are often non-gamers. If we just look at this thread, as it is a collection of people who actually play games, and more specifically this game, you see that adding same sex marriage will not have a reaction as adverse as you imagine.

How many gaming sites/blogs would you see outright condemning SE for adding same sex marriage? How many people would vow to quit or never play the game because of it? I'm going to bet on the side of "not many".

For some other games, possibly. However, I'm a veteran MMO player (and not just the FF franchise) and I have NEVER played with so many LBGT players, ever.

For the second part, the idea of changing the term of what the "marriage" actually is seems to be getting some strong support, and that would probably let the whole thing fly a little more under the radar.

Additionally, it's just an avatar! If SE really wanted they could say that in-game gender doesn't reflect RL gender; OR they could say that they are choosing to allocate their developmental resources elsewhere and enforcing/adding a gender restriction would consume too many resources.
