But, i see no mmo listed here, and you did listed not many of single player games.Yeah it kinda is opinion, and one I don't agree with.
Here are a few games I think have better animations than FFXIV.
Uncharted 1-3
The Last of Us (best I have ever seen so far)
Max Payne 3
Batman Arkham games
God of War 3
Vanquish
Devil May Cry
So yeah, there are plenty of singleplayer games I think have better animation than FFXIV.
But I'm not saying animation is not important, of course it is. I just don't think it's as important in a MMO game over other things that should take priority like you guys think and I'm glad that the devs seem to think that too.
FFXIV's character animaton is very special and no other mmo even comes close to it, because it is really good even for single player games. that was the argument, and it still stands.
You want me to list more SP games?
Yes compared to other MMO games the animations have been better, hardly something I would call special since compared to other MMO games FFXIV have done a pretty shitty job with clunky UI with barely any of the features one would expect in a MMO, combat that lags, a ward that is something from a joke at the office, empty boring environments and character movement that feels very restricted, pretty... but restricted. Having pretty animation is definitely not going to attract players other than hardcore FFXI players when so much other crap exist.
Just hearing a LS member say "Wow that's pretty cool and useful" to when I told them about ctrl+rightklicking on a item and it showing up in the chat for people to just put the mouse over it and see what the item does, shows how far behind the FF MMOs are. That's a standard thing in MMO games. But hey, at least we run and walk pretty...

Ah you got that wrong there son. Let me break it down for you:Unfortunately they have not confirmed or denied backpedaling and strafing. They are simply blatant in the pre-alpha Video. It is very obvious that they have implemented "Standard" Western MMO controls which will mean A turns left it stead of runs left and D does the same to the right. S will backpedal instead of turn around and the Camera will have basicly no manual control.
Current controls:
W: Run Forward, inertia stop
A: Run Left
D: Run Right
S: Run toward the camera, with inertia stop & go animation (really nice)
New controls:
W: Run Forward (removal of inertia stop animation)
A: Strafe Left (removal of running animation)
D: Strafe Right (removal of running animation)
S: Backstep at 1/2 speed. (removal of stop & go animation and ability to face the camera)
Mouse key held down and moved left/right: Change running direction left/right (replaces previous A and D key function)
For those unfamiliar with this change-up, it makes it really annoying to view the front of your character. You have to manually move the camera all the way around to face your character, and then if you move it's very awkward so you have to move the camera all the way back around to the back. I think the habit of a lot of players now is to view their characters from the front and while they're hanging out with others they're used to being able to walk left, right, and towards the camera. In the new version you're not going to be able to do that and it's going to be a lot less enchanting.

What worries me about this isn't the fact that they are removing the 2 step inertia animation, it's the fact that they're making it like a 3rd person shooter... say for example you are at ifrit and theres a pt member a few yalms in front and a plume pops under you..in order to run backwards you have to swing the camera around 1st then run? or you will end up back pedaling and die? i guess kiting is out of the question now too?Ah you got that wrong there son. I doubt the current Ifrit fight would be in the game as-is. Running backward is too awkward for these new controls. There might still be Eruption-like mechanics but you would probably dodge them by running forward, not backward or to the side. I think if they port the Ifrit fight they might take away the Eruption target mechanic because if you run forward you would just kill the tank. What worries me about this isn't the fact that they are removing the 2 step inertia animation, it's the fact that they're making it like a 3rd person shooter... say for example you are at ifrit and theres a pt member a few yalms in front and a plume pops under you..in order to run backwards you have to swing the camera around 1st then run? or you will end up back pedaling and die? i guess kiting is out of the question now too?
sounds depressing... ok another example.. say you're on brd and you are too close to combo, in order to get to the right distance you have to either slowly walk backwards or swing the camera around run back and swing the camera back around again toward the mob. Even in hamlet as a crafter i run backwards so i can see if the mobs enimty bar is flashing red or not... the character animation change is minor to me, but these controls if permanent could be terrible i think.I doubt the current Ifrit fight would be in the game as-is.
