They kind of are. This will be pretty much the only MMO in history to be relaunched like this. It's not like they can't rework this into the game later, that or they feel like it isn't necessary to have.
Extremely well said, quoted you in the OP.Though I take issue with how Nemy presents her arguments here and there, I find I have to agree with her more and more. The movements of our characters are real and it makes them feel alive. Get rid of the start/stop animations? Not ideal, but fine. But what possible reason is there for removing our current running animation? The motion capture already existed, and the new engine is more powerful than Crystal Tools. It should be able to support the old, no?
I think what this thread really boils down to is an argument between people who feel a real connection with their characters which is supported and augmented by the realistic motions they perform while moving, and those people who couldn't care less about any of that stuff and just want a game.
In the case of the latter, that's exactly how GW2 is. There's no soul to the game or to your character. It's just a game. You aren't having a grand adventure, you're just controlling a puppet on screen. In Final Fantasy, every little thing, from the subtle movements while standing, the way we lean a bit when running, the really sudden stop we make when changing direction suddenly, and even to how the camera is positioned, all add up to let the player transport themselves into the character on screen and to inhabit that character. This isn't about roleplay, mind you. I don't even know what it's called, but I'm sure empathy comes into it.
All of this is important.
The amount of white knights in here is just amazing...
It can be if slowing to a stop interferes with casting, or you have to completely stop and wait for some long drawn out animations to finish before you can start the next WS then yes it has a huge aspect on the functionality of the game. The way you've been coming off is you'd prefer they bring Animation lock in ARR just to make the game as eye catching as possible.
You can't really have both precise stop on a dime timing and precise fluid movements that doesn't adversely affect gameplay or aesthetics, it's a lose-lose situation and as I mentioned before, they are probably just struggling to try and find a good compromise to keep both parties happy, but as it stands it shouldn't be the main focus when there are far more important things to worry about like having a fully functioning UI.

You would put monster design.... above your own character animation. It's a big part of making the game feel pretty but I wouldn't go as far as to say it's core aspect in a MMO game. Interface, gameplay, enviroment, monster design, character design, I would put all those above animation in a MMO game. And honestly, the animations in FFXIV are not as godly as you people make them out to be. Go watch a gameplay video from The Last of US, now that is godly. The FFXIV running/walking animations are pretty yes but come on... they're not THAT special.
O-kay.
Anyway, opinions.
The current character animations being THAT special is not an opinion though, since you can't name 1 single mmo that has such quality animations. (also, not many single player games have animation of such quality)
ok they will change they'll put these as monsters :
and add your great animations
This was one of the largest criticisms about the game at launch; all flash and no substance. It was even my thought at the time. "Wow, this game is pretty, but it sure does play like crap."
Yeah it kinda is opinion, and one I don't agree with. You would put monster design.... above your own character animation.

Here are a few games I think have better animations than FFXIV.
Uncharted 1-3
The Last of Us (best I have ever seen so far)
Max Payne 3
Batman Arkham games
God of War 3
Vanquish
Devil May Cry
So yeah, there are plenty of singleplayer games I think have better animation than FFXIV.
But I'm not saying animation is not important, of course it is. I just don't think it's as important in a MMO game over other things that should take priority like you guys think and I'm glad that the devs seem to think that too.

FFXIV's character animaton is very special and no other mmo even comes close to it, because it is really good even for single player games. that was the argument, and it still stands.
I think this game has more important issues to resolve before it is re launched than mere "eye candy".
I'll be honest and say that I always found the extra step and "momentum" a bit annoying, made me feel sluggish and slow.![]()
