leveling was a pain
there wasnt any content(not like you needed it when you were trying to level still)
the content we did have was the shadowlord(that was endgame til zilart, not counting a few NMs)
gil was scarce(so was gear)

Yup. It was awesome. And Zilart came out with FFXI on release day in North America. I played it from day 1, and there was still lots to do.
