I would think a lot of mentors would be all too happy to do what we signed contracts to do, I have the experience though of people who need mentoring either ignoring the offer or telling me where to stick it. When you have a couple of dozen such experiences you tend to just shrug and let people be bad. Not to say I've had NO success, but those are like mount drops, so it's easy to conclude that people have no interest in being good at the game.

I guess the question is which comes first?

Do mentors get ground down by constant rejection of help and rudeness? Or does their contempt for weaker players cause them to offer help in an abrasive manner, and that is the cause of the rejection?

I honestly don't know the answer to that, but imagine that like everything else in games and life, some mentors are better than others.

I will say, I don't often 'vocalise' my desire for guidance, but sometimes - in content I'm not confident playing - I will mark and follow a player who has a mentor crown as tend to assume they know what they're doing and I can therefore follow their lead to a degree.

I just checked the requirements to be a battle mentor and was horrified to discover that I qualify lol.

This suggests the system could do with a little tweaking.

Yup, anyone can get battle mentor. Only requires a lot of time for dungeon clears/commendations. But I'm not sure what they could do to improve it.
