I was disappointed with the name Sage so Viper is a bit disappointing as well. My bid would have been for something like "Twin-Fang". Generally the same but more of a nod to the dual blades and less a poisonous snake.

However, having said that I assume the naming is due to it being a New World job and therefore being named by the tribes of the new world.

I would expect the new caster job to be similarly "Animal aspect" named, perhaps "Turtle"?

That said, it's already been revealed, so unless the overwhelming majority of the playerbase disaprove of the name, they ain't changing it.

Sage at least feels like a coalescence of very Sage-y references. I initially hated Sage but now I think it is one of the most clever evolutions of the original job in the game, where the weapons both reflect the job's prerequisite of acquiring all four crystals of light, and also often resemble the magic-casting "fang" items from the earlier titles. And the addersting/gall DPS/heal duality is just the same concept of Sage being a strong magical healer and damage dealer, just bent into a different space than the same black/white magic spells every other class uses.

After Sage used the "snake" motifs with Addersting/Addersgall and arguable "fang" weapons, I don't think any name can really excuse the fact that Viper is just the same motif all over again. And actually, if I wanted to be even more savage, we already have a reptilian-possessed melee job in Dragoon. Viper is literally just Dragoon without wings.

Poison isn't the only qualifying feature of a Viper, speed is as well, see my post about "Cottonmouth Viper".

Good motifs utilize more than a single facet, and the fact that people keep pulling this "oh vipers are the fastest snakes" to justify the name is just...really poor critical analysis.

A job with speed AND poison, sure, call that a Viper.

A job that is only about speed? Calling it a Viper is practically a malapropism, or at the very least not really delivering on the expectations of the name. You'd be better off calling it something like Falcon, or Panther, or Shark.

Again, I think Viper is additionally a poor name because windmilling a sword-staff around isn't remotely Viperish. The split swords, sure, but that's only half the skills. So why isn't this class called a Hunter, with a Viper stance (separate swords) and a Hawk stance (combined swords)?

I agree with this, Dragoons don't have Dragon wings or fangs (beyond the skill name).
Ninja doesn't even have a poison and no one bats an eye.

Vipers are animals that strike with speed and from a hiding spot.
If anything just limiting ourselves to poison would be generic and uninspired.

Devs also have to put gameplay first before introducing a poison for poison's sakes.
Complaining because Viper doesn't have poison is just finding any excuses to complain.

You have our position kind of backwards, though.

It's not that we necessarily wanted or needed a poison job.

It's that naming a job with clearly poisonous connotations without intending to deliver on that is just poorly thought out design. If it has no poison, there are a dozen other nonvenomous animals they could have named the job after to much clearer and stronger effect. Hawk. Panther. Etc.
