I'm not a fan of the name either, unless it has snake or poison themes (which should've been shown in the reveal if it has any). If anything, it sounds more like a title or rank, rather than a class/job - kinda like how the reapers in Ul'dah are the Lemures, but you don't see the job itself being called Lemure.

That said, it's already been revealed, so unless the overwhelming majority of the playerbase disaprove of the name, they ain't changing it.

so apparently the only option that doesn't "stress the newbies" is either pressing 1211111111, or do nothing at all.

I actually like the name and I'd like to wait and see what the job has in store for us before complaining that the name is unfitting. If the naming convention has anything to do with Turali Hunters, then I have zero issues with it.

Even if the job does not have anything to do with poison or venom, here some trivia - the Cottonmouth Viper is the world's fastest snake in striking speed. The job trailer put an emphasis on the job's speed of attacks, so chances are the theme they went with was speed.

I was disappointed with the name Sage so Viper is a bit disappointing as well. My bid would have been for something like "Twin-Fang". Generally the same but more of a nod to the dual blades and less a poisonous snake.

However, having said that I assume the naming is due to it being a New World job and therefore being named by the tribes of the new world.

I would expect the new caster job to be similarly "Animal aspect" named, perhaps "Turtle"?

Sage at least feels like a coalescence of very Sage-y references. I initially hated Sage but now I think it is one of the most clever evolutions of the original job in the game, where the weapons both reflect the job's prerequisite of acquiring all four crystals of light, and also often resemble the magic-casting "fang" items from the earlier titles. And the addersting/gall DPS/heal duality is just the same concept of Sage being a strong magical healer and damage dealer, just bent into a different space than the same black/white magic spells every other class uses.

After Sage used the "snake" motifs with Addersting/Addersgall and arguable "fang" weapons, I don't think any name can really excuse the fact that Viper is just the same motif all over again. And actually, if I wanted to be even more savage, we already have a reptilian-possessed melee job in Dragoon. Viper is literally just Dragoon without wings.

Poison isn't the only qualifying feature of a Viper, speed is as well, see my post about "Cottonmouth Viper".

This is going to sound strange, but I just had a thought. Maybe it is like a title similar to say the Witcher series where different types of Witchers have different schools. Perhaps its a band of fighters who go by "Vipers". If it has a sort of medieval flare, and is a band of units that do make a difference in the lore in some way, I will actually be VERY into it.

If this sets up different animal inspired jobs, I might be into say a couple more jobs with cool animal titles. Perhaps the "Vipers" could have at least one rival that they naturally oppose, and that job could be revealed in a later expansion. Honestly, I would love a bear inspired job that has a hand axe vibe. Perhaps they would wear pelts, and could be this games "Hunter" type class.

Either way, I am all for more classes in the game that have titles to them, and heavily associated with a particular setting. Like honestly being some kind of a Templar, or the classic Knight job would be cool too.

Hoplophilliac, champion, sneaker, destreza, scout, dimachaerus, ninja turtle. It would probably be easier to suggest more names if I understood what it was meant to be, but I think like gubnreaker it’s not really going to seem coherent if you haven’t played ff the one with that guy in.

I prefer the name "Viper" instead of something generic as "Blademaster".

Blademaster/Swordmaster only refers to the mastery of sword, Viper has much more references and set better expectations.

    In Final Fantasy jobs:
Viper refers to the 2 blades like the fang of a viper, a "viper" is also used to refer to someone who backstab. The animal also perfectly fits an assassin, fast paced job.
Just like how Dragoon is named Dragoon instead of spearmaster as it refers to a culture, a knight related to dragons be it hunting, riding or using their power.
Samurai is named Samurai instead of Swordmaster or "Japanese Swordsman" as it refers to the culture of Samurai.
Machinist isn't named "Gunner" or "Gunslinger" as it refers to the use of machines rather than the gun.

On the opposite, Fire Emblem swordmaster:
In the whole series, you have Stefan, Lucia Catherine, Rutger, Ryoma. Those characters have way different background and culture.
"Swordmaster" fits an Asian sword user as well a Western sword user. It would fit PLD or SAM if applied to FF.

The name of "Viper" gives far more information and set clear expectations on the job than "dude who's good with swords".

this are two different things, blademaster is not just a mastery of the sword , it has an actual meaning and applied to games , a blademaster is adept in ALL melee weapons ,think of Bloodborne main character the Hunter, he's an actual blademaster because is adept in several weapons.
as for swordmaster in this yes , just master of swords.
