It's not that the mods are lazy. 3rd party tools are responsible from preventing the site itself from being overridden by spam and bots. We're not just discussing convenience features here.

I dislike a lot of egotistical moderators but I'd be lying if I said this was something they could handle without the third party tools that use the reddit API.
