This youtuber (its 18 minutes if you have the time) explains perfectly why MMOs are losing their standing in general, the fun is being sucked away at all varying levels.
The cause? Because Devs think Frustration=Losing Subs in the modern day MMO, and afraid to teach players. Only small MMO dev Teams nowadays are making games with appropriate difficulty, Corporate MMOs are going in the opposite direction with many bad decisions.
I'm not saying FFXIV is heading in this direction, but it teeters on the edge on a couple of fronts. The overworld and dungeon content specifically however in my opinion is compromised, these days its all about giving players the most ease of access, and not teaching players to work together.
