WoW did win, at least as far as being the MMO king. You are absolutely correct. However, it is self destructing at the moment and has been for some time. FF XIV is poised to pass them by relatively soon, but I don't think it is there yet, though even then it would never reach WoW's numbers when it was in its prime. Still, as it is famously put in WoW..."No king rules forever, my son." The crown will pass to something else eventually, whether or not it's FF XIV. WoW might have broken records and made a big name for itself, but very little of that matters once it has lost its heart and soul and falls into disrepair, which it arguably started doing years ago. All the awards in the world can be tarnished with a bad reputation. I still remember the good times and I will always remember them fondly, but I will be forever salty about what happened to it. Plenty of others no doubt feel the same.
Sure, but that's neither here nor there. The intention of both the OP of "Congratulations Square Enix! FF4 surpasses WoW this year. (Source inside)" and the person who wrote the article was to celebrate that FF14 surpassed WoW this year, which as I previously stated, do not see as an achivement to celebrate for the reasons I mentioned.
If you want to you can start a topic about how WoW has lost it's heart and soul and fallen into disrepair and I'd gladly post on that topic about how I'd be surprised if any game could keep their heart and soul and not fall into disrepair after such a long time and who knows how many changes and departures on the dev team, and my thoughts on FFXIV already going down that route with the clear shift on priorities for content development.

Nostalgy? Habit? Good lore or gameplay?
I (sadly or not) didn't play WoW for long as it's not my cup of the tea, but despite all its flaws, WoW is still one of the few good MMOs out there with next to no decent alternatives so it's not much of a surprise it still has a huge community. As good as FFXIV is, and as much as I love it, I saw a lot of ex-WoW players saying that it's "too slow" for them, meaning the way the game unfolds its content for the most part. And it's not wrong - the way we go trough story and how we unlock high-end content is on a slower side comparing to all the MMOs I tried out in the past. It's not a bad thing, but if players prefer to have everything available for them right this second - they likely won't stay here for long even if they like the story and battle system overall, because it doesn't matter if you're still in ARR or going trough ShB already - the overall pace doesn't change much. That's just how the game is, and I can see how it could turn off some players who prefer faster paced games, especially in Western community where grinding 1 month worth of a content in 2 days because "faster higher stronger" is a norm (but in all honesty, I think FFXIV's pace is one of the major factors that make it good).

Honestly I am happy with the slower pace of FFXIV. I do not miss the atmosphere nor the gameplay of WoW at all. I really am enjoying the pace of FF a lot.
As a huge mythic raider in WoW it was always about moving fast to level to get to the end game. one week, maybe 2 weeks, of raid and then pushing to mythic raiding. It started to feel like a headache to me when Legion expansion was over. I tried switching from years of warlock to rogue to see if that would help my boredom and dullness for the game. Only for a few months and then I started to really see how the devs gave no F**cks about the player base. Just shove more and more Bulls**t down the players throat cause they thought a grinding idea was the best no matter what. But the same old same old was just to boring to me. Doing the same world quests over and over. Killing the same bosses in mythic to get a piece of gear that literally eluded me for months was boring as well. Running mythic +'s also was dull and boring. Doing 15's and 16's just to get hope my great vault had what I wanted turned out to be monotonous and disappointing
A method that Blizzard sold would be great for getting gear. Well not for me. Great Vault was disappointing to me almost every Tuesday. I would have 3 of the same gear sometimes. Got a weapon only once in the time that the expansion was releashed. Sorry for the rant but I want nothing to do with WoW in it's current form right now. For me the game has turned into utter Sh*t. The devs only care for the money. Not the Player base. And it shows drastically right now.

This is why I just generally dont like threads like this (especially since it gives faulty sources) -- because it goes back to this whole thing that FF14 only matters because its ''''''''''''finally''''''''''''''' more popular and played than WoW. Its feels like people need to be continuously positively reinforced that they made the better choice of playing one game over the other.

See the reason why I have to post these threads is because this is major news. Just as a piece of information this Twitter post I think is up to 10k likes for this site. Normal post daily for them gets between 10 and maybe 40 likes.
This survey/poll/guess or whatever you want to call it went viral by any definition of the word you want to use the MMO sphere of forums. Asmongold spent over an hour on it, it went to WoW forums very quickly and through every reddit and Youtube area imaginable in under a day.
Obviously many people are repeating on those forums what you have seen here but it does not matter. The fact that the question is even being asked is important because people currently playing on dead servers in WoW waiting 8 MONTHS for new content will see this. That is Blizzards worst nightmare that there might be a viable alternative that people will see and be done putting up with their crap.
I have never seen an FF14 player describe the relationship between the community and them as adversarial. That is a very common term right now used over there which why you are seeing SOOOOO many of these threads pop up here. These threads might have been rare here even at the height of FF14 Shadowbringers story but I promise you they were all over WoW's forums during the Battle for Azeroth massive content drought while they waited for the new expansion.
Square Enix just happened to time a massively popular expansion and content in a way that lined up with massive droughts in WoW with one bad expansion and another in the works. It is no surprise you are seeing WoW players looking for a new experience.
Our job as FF14 players is too do what we always do. Act nice and help new people.

This isnt even news -- this is a MONTH OLD. It was on the front page of FF14 reddit in May and was met with good criticism for the content on it, since the numbers made no sense according to a number of posters.
The only reason it was brought up again because Final Project made an article about it that was spread on Twitter -- it didnt help that same article had to be EDITTED TWICE.
Asmongold is basically a react streamer on top of being the most popular MMO streamer -- yea, so that makes sense. In fact -- as much as I dislike Zach, he made good points for why the article seemed suspicious.
WoW Forums openly doompost on WoW, its been their favorite pasttime since WoD.
Every reddit? Bro, this wasnt posted on main WoW or FF14 reddit when the article appeared. It was posted on MMORPG and Games where the number one responses were talking about how unreliable MMO-P is.
So heres how I know you are getting your positions and opinion only based off WoW GD -- because you've mentioned them three times rather than any other medium.
WoW GD always doomposts -- heck you can find posts back in the day about how WRATH was going to kill WoW in the old GD archives and it was a POPULAR opinion.
Not disagreeing -- but I find it completely weird that WoW players would jump ship as the expansion ends to embrace a six month content drought in a different game to the point where a website surpassed LuckyBancho's census at the peak of ShB in 5.3.
My opinion is that WoW itself started out great. Not only did it build on the already successful Warcraft games, it launched with a huge game world that took itself fairly seriously and had multiple different playable races each with their own starting areas and lore. It was also a lot more accessible compared to earlier MMO's, though still committed to having an open world that could be dangerous. I have fond memories of getting lost by going in a random direction, exploring a cave and discovering 'secret' quests. It managed to maintain my interest until Cataclysm, which incidentally was the same expansion that streamlined the base game's content, removed a bunch of quests and reduced the danger in the open world to make enemy encounters very easy.
To me, FFXIV is currently the best option on the market as far as I'm concerned but that is largely due to the lack of competition. It isn't really threatened by anything right now - especially when it comes to being story driven. ESO has a bigger open world with more things to do, but the character models have an 'uncanny valley' angle to them in my opinion...and the combat is jarring to me.
There's a lot about WoW that I like better, but not enough for me to continue playing it. The main things I miss are some of the playable races such as the Blood Elves who I adored both in terms of their character models and the lore surrounding them. I also miss some of the classes - Death Knight, Warlock, Druid and Demon Hunter in particular. Reaper is coming with Endwalker and looks promising, though hopefully it is written to truly be a 'darker job'.
All in all, I think there's a lot of elements that both MMO's could take from each other moving forward.
I agree with your points too. Personally i don’t think ff14 is amazing or perfect or anything like that. It has a lot of major flaws, it’s just that those flaws aren’t as bad as the ones from the current mmo’s on the market. I’m really looking forward to the new mmo’s coming out and i’ll probably jump ship to one of them as they should be coming out at the end of 6.0.
