Lucky Bancho's estimate is 900,000 characters.

It excludes free trials and bots, so if we include these it could be over a million. Would over a million surpass WoW? I don't know because I don't know their numbers.

What we can be quite sure of is that subscriptions for this game will skyrocket when Endwalker releases and this will be noticed in the game like it usually is, but it will go down as time goes on because patch hype isn't as big as expansion hype.

WoW uses a lot of dirty tricks to increase subscriptions like pressuring you to login every day to keep up and having mounts for getting a 6 month subscription, while this game encourages breaks and makes it easy to get back into endgame content. WoW has a lot more people who have gained so many achievements in it that they could not ever change to another game and have to start over, however bad it gets. This game is at a disadvantage statistically because it doesn't do these things (and never should).

I mean I subbed to wow for like 3 months. I completed my Ksm, Aotc and got the achievement mount from the raid. There was no daily grinds, at most I needed to get gear. I would say ffxiv has more "dirty tricks" currently with the housing that kept me subbed 3 months where I didn't play (which i did let it fall and lost my house).

I'm just happy FFXIV is doing so well, regardless of WoW. The success is well-earned. But still, if FFXIV is beating out "Regular WoW" even without the Classic players, that's still a huge deal. Whether you can count Regular vs Classic as two separate products is a messy question, but I think it's valid if you can identify people who only play Classic and people who only play Regular. If Blizzard has split their population so much that they have to remake it into two separate games that don't touch each other, then for all intents and purposes that sounds like two different games to me.

But I'm getting off-topic. Regarding the original post's title, yeah I love FF4. The dragoon spends a lot less time on the floor and more time in the air!

I really don't see the achivement here.

When new MMORPGs came out between 2004-2010, ok yeah, it makes sense to announce yourself as the new "WoW killer" as a marketing campaign.

    But it's been 17 years.

This is the equivalent of celebrating an 18 year old winning a race against the 73 year old 1972 5000m Olympic's Gold Medal champion.

    WoW has already won.

I think it's more like the MMO in the lead of a 20 year marathon (WoW) suddenly collapses from exhaustion because they couldn't pace themselves and didn't train well enough because training is for the "weak" in their eyes, and the 2nd runner up (FF XIV) just...passes them by, waving as they go.

Call me back to celebrate in 18 years when/if FFXIV or any other MMO upholds that position for that period of time.

I'd be surprised if there are any MMORPGs still kicking by then, to be honest, at least in their current forms. The genre's been on its way out for awhile now, though it has gotten some boosts in popularity here and there.

While I cannot give a specific date on when personal housing will be implemented, I can say that prices will be completely separate from free company housing, and, naturally, far more affordable.

So WoW has already won, as I previously said.

Sure? You are just bound and determined to be right in one way or another, huh? If this makes you feel better, go for it.
