EDIT: Also, I agree that botting should be an instant perma-ban as should use of all third party programs. I 100% believe they are being too lenient and understanding and should take a zero-tolerance approach instead. I understand this will upset a certain subsection of the community that relies on them for raiding, but it's completely destroying another subsection of the game.
I definitely don't have any qualms against making botting a permaban. Like you said, they're extremely lenient with it as it is. As for the prior comment, like mentioned in the OP there are grey zones where people take offense to something that other people don't. i.e. the word mentioned in the OP, there are more cases like that, especially recently with certain terms changing meaning. Again, I'm not arguing against making reports against these invalid. I'm arguing for not having the strikes that occur be permanent and/or be irreversible through community effort.

Secondly why is it important to know which of the things that breaks the rules (sexual content, using a disparaging word for disabled people as a slur) is what got you in trouble? Just stop breaking the rules and you won’t get banned. Being ‘European’ isn’t an excuse for being abusive. Sounds like you’ve been very lucky and square have been too lenient IMO.
When did I ever mention that it's cute or that it's okay to be advertised publicly? It goes without saying that it should be private, the community finder definitely makes me cringe. What I'm saying is that calling myself a d-g-n-r-t- jokingly shouldn't be reason for someone else to take offense and report me over it to lose my account.

As for the latter argument, because you have no clue what got you in trouble in the first place. That "disparaging word for disabled people" has a completely different meaning in Europe and it's used all the time here. Not to mention that I am disabled and I fit in that category, and I don't take offense to it. If I did get banned over using it, I'd know that I shouldn't use it again and I'm aware of it. There's an extreme amount of nuance here.

Basically this. What people in the EU find offensive and what people in the US find offensive is quite different. I probably wouldn't use the "disparaging word for disabled people" as an example since even here I've rarely seen it thrown around like free candy, but I can imagine that the usual banter can suddenly get you in trouble because there's that one US player showing up on the EU data center, not that uncommon with how unrestricted XIV is when it comes to switching data centers, and you won't ever know why you got in trouble in the first place. This is basically why some people advise you to just not talk in-game at all, "offensive" is too broad of a term that can vastly differ depending on regions.

As a technical EU resident until January 1st, I can't say I see that word used all that often. Except for one particular group of WoW raiders my partner plays with, who are all dutch teenagers.
So I can't say whether it's a european thing, or a teenage boy thing, or hell it could even be a WoW thing. But basically every other sentence that erupts from his discord when he's playing with them is "you f-ing r-tard"
My question is, why is it necessary? 'idiot' works just as well.

Seems to me it's more a matter of growing up, than a disparity of culture. We've all been there, everyone in high school thinks it's cool as f-ck to swear every f-cking other sh!t-ass word and it just becomes a f-cking habit. But you grow out of it.
If it's something you're likely to get banned for, just start growing up now.

And there's where you're wrong. Everything you've listed in your examples are just straight up insults and sure, even there you have people who may get offended by them and some who may not, but we aren't talking solely about insults.

I think the point is being missed here.

The problem is in the strict escalation policy. If you have for example, received a 3 day suspension even once, for whatever reason, even the tiniest of offenses is guaranteed to earn you a 10 or 20 in the future, even if your original penalty was five years ago. Given how incredibly unlikely it is to get banned for botting, the system really only hurts legitimate players who can get caught up in DF drama, because we are all human.

GMs also don't apply permanent bans (20d suspension is the maximum they can do and it's the only one you can get multiple times), so I'm not sure what the OP is on about with that one, terminations are entirely up to the account admin team in Japan.

If you are an EU citizen, provided you got banned for something chat related, you can actually get a log of exactly what you got banned for.

If you want temporary strikes then I think they should last at least 12 months. I don't think many people would appreciate other people going off the rails when it suits them, and when their strike has gone down.

Going to be blunt, but if you aren't prepared to take the punishments, then don't do the act in the first place. It's very simple really. I don't think you really should be given just a slap on the wrist for something that is genuinely an issue, it never resolves anything in the long run. Their warning goes, or they get their redemption then they go back to their same habit, especially if nothing actionable comes from it.

Well it’s not my job to tell anyone how to behave and I guess if you aren’t specifically insulted disabled people when throwing around the r word then you’re not necessarily a bad person. It’s immature at best though and there’s plenty of other words that are socially acceptable that won’t get you banned.

I like that Square Enix police the game from things like that. It’s why people complain about WoW, they let it become part of the culture there.

Again my point stands, if you don’t do things that aren’t against the TOS then they aren’t going to ban you. Most of us haven’t been called into speak with a GM and I doubt anyone is a saint here.

People have been banned for saying things on twitch. You really are better off not saying anything to anyone in game or in public.

If you follow the ToS, you have nothing to worry about. There isn't a you can go off the rails every 24 months card, and thankfully there isn't. Behavior change is usually enabled when people realize there is a 3-strike to forever being banned from Eorzea policy.

Anonymous or not, the fact is if you harass people in-game in any fashion in that chat box, even in shout, it's all recorded. There are a few people who just seem to play this game without any regard to moderating themselves, and think they can just call people degrading things in shout chat and get away with it. Then they come back with the lame "what did I do?" when they get sent to GM jail. This applies to twitch too, because the last ToS revision allows them free reign to moderate anyway they can.

You know exactly what you did in-game, and if you forgot you are probably doing it too much.

I do agree that context is important here, but I also feel in general, strikes should degrade off accounts after a certain amount of time has passed without any other infractions.

It's pretty terrible that someone could get a strike for emote spam that's treated equally as terrible as someone stalking or being abusive to another player, and the former should fall off after a period of time, like say, 6 or 12 months.

I think a (at best) three strikes and you're done policy is pretty severe when there's no degradation of offenses over a period of time. You could've done something minor (but actionable, to be wholly fair) 5 years ago and if you mess up a second time, it's up to a GM's mood if they feel like you deserve to be scaled up to a second ban or permabanned.

The fact that years can pass between potential infractions and are still treated like they happened yesterday feels a bit extreme to me.
