i cursed in the in-game chat in the very incident i was mentioning. this idea that if the GMs see a bad word they'll instaban is ludicrous, and is perpetuated by people who want to get away with being jerks

Perpetuated by whom? If someone is warning against usage of certain words, you'd think they aren't using them themselves. Whether they want to or not changes nothing. "Jerk" is a very strong word, when it comes to this game's community. Someone you may consider "a jerk", I may not consider. Vice versa.

this is a bunch of bull. i cuss in game, but don't direct it at anyone, and the only GM interactions i've ever had are when i've reported people for blatant harassment (including one person very blatantly and intentionally trying to cause a normal raid roulette to fail). i guarantee that 99% of the people who were "wrongly banned for idly saying a curse word" are intentionally leaving out context to make themselves look innocent

It most certainly is not. I know several people who have been permabanned from this very forum for cursing. One described Weeping City as a cluster (you can fill in what word accompanied that) and were banned the next day. Ironically, you could search for curse words right now and likely find posts. They were just never reported.

the forum rules are not the game rules, and the forum mods are not the game GMs, so your counter-example proves nothing.

On a side note for this thread. I think some forum mods and forum members here are snowflakes rather than in-game. I've been suspended twice in a month on these forums. If i recall the last time it's because i told someone they possibly might be braindead due to their ludicrous opinion about something. It was a few months back. I just find it funny and over the top. If only they suspended(Banned) RMT bots as fast as they do on these forums just because someone got "Offended" or their feelings got hurt.

Here's the thing, you are better off NOT CHATTING AT ALL in-game (be careful here on the forums as well). For one, yes, you never know what will offend, and two SE seems to ignore context. Casually slip a curse word, BANNED. Doesn't have to be directed at anyone. It's likely the word tried to censor in your OP - by the way censoring doesn't work, neither here OR in-game - would probably get you banned. All it takes is someone's strongly worded report. You want to chat with your edgy friends? Move to Discord or something - keep it out of game - THAT INCLUDES private or party chat. You are better off not having a paper trail when a GM goes through your logs.

I may be more paranoid than most, sure, but I've never been banned in-game. Never once have I had a GM interaction. Not chatting, and if I do chat keeping things AT WORST PG (G is better) is the way to go.

How is cussing a slip? You literally have all the time between thinking the thought and typing it out and pressing enter on your keyboard to think the action through and be like "Oh hey perhaps I should keep it clean. My bad."

EDIT: Also, I agree that botting should be an instant perma-ban as should use of all third party programs. I 100% believe they are being too lenient and understanding and should take a zero-tolerance approach instead. I understand this will upset a certain subsection of the community that relies on them for raiding, but it's completely destroying another subsection of the game.

I personally feel botting should be an instant permanent ban. I can understand the leniency can help some players learn from their mistake and become better people, I don't mean to sound harsh, but it also serves as a one-time free pass to bot. Basically you can bot all you like until you're caught, then you simply lose your free-pass and return to playing normally. Since there's a very high chance you'll never be caught and it's risk-free the first time even if you are, there's a huge incentive to bot. Of course, in the case Enix made it a permanent ban, they should be clear that bots and hacks are zero tolerance.

I fully agree harassment strikes should not be anonymous. It's also fine you get second chances, people do say things they regret after a long day or when they're tired and snap. It's not a good thing to do but it happens. You should be told what action or words resulted in your strike so you can pay better attention to it in the future. It's like being arrested and fined but they never tell you what for.

It's very reasonable to make botting an instant permaban. I don't disagree with that notion, Square is very forgiving with that as it is. The points you bring up against it make a lot of sense.

Harrassment strikes are anonymous to prevent indirect harrasment. This has happened before and this is why SE stance is firm on it. This is why SE only states what rule you broke. if a stream was used, they will ask you to delete all videos as well on the streaming site. Personally I think its a bit much but I see why its anonymous. people of have done crappier things when they find out who got them in trouble.

I do believe they the rules need to go both ways though. If a person makes a report of being harrassed and it turns out to be falsed, they need to be slapped with a strike just as well.
