I disagree. Zidane, Cloud, and Squall have quirks that would annoy me if they were created by me. Player character works well for me if it's like the WoL in FFXIV, where the character is prominent in the story but still vague. But for single player characters, I'd rather they be not vague at all, so I want an actual character created by the game, not me, so I can view that character as a character, not just an extension of me.
The other way of making player-created character work is to give story choices, but that has its own problems where the choices presented might not actually be what you think it means. For example, SWTOR does this with its force/moral choices, and I hated it. The choices presented are often either don't make sense, too limited, or misleading.
If someone cannot play a game because of the gender of the protagonist, I think that's ok, and games should not have to leave everything to the player just because different players want different things.
