I'm not opposed to having a female lead since I enjoy them a great deal when done right. VI was done right. 13 was not, but not because of Lightning honestly, though I personally didn't think she was that interesting. She lacked any real personality. I'd be willing to bet that 13 has been a factor in their decision making the last few years, though I doubt that had anything to do with Lightning being the main character and female. The games just sucked. lol However, In the 16 trailer alone there was at least 3-4 different female characters. It's unfair to judge it in that respect as things currently stand. We know next to nothing about it. It doesn't appear that we're going to have another 6 or 13 with a female lead but they usually do an excellent job of adding them to the main cast and keeping them just as relevant as the main character. 15 wasn't my favorite game and I do think the main characters were somewhat lacking. It goes to show that character gender isn't really a factor when it comes to making a good game. 15 to me was a bit subpar. SE just needs to focus on making a good game. Hopefully FF 16 is one such game. We haven't had a truly good single player FF game for a long time now aside from the FF7 Remake...but that's a remake, not a brand new title.

One of the reasons I suggest a character creator in this game is because of things like this. Most good single player games, specially rpgs, these days have a character creator. So even if you don't find a character you like in the story you can still find yourself in the game's world in some way, even if it's not recognized. A great option for New game+ unlock.
It was my favorite thing about White Knight Chronicles, definitely a default and standard feature all rpgs need to have.

I disagree. Zidane, Cloud, and Squall have quirks that would annoy me if they were created by me. Player character works well for me if it's like the WoL in FFXIV, where the character is prominent in the story but still vague. But for single player characters, I'd rather they be not vague at all, so I want an actual character created by the game, not me, so I can view that character as a character, not just an extension of me.

The other way of making player-created character work is to give story choices, but that has its own problems where the choices presented might not actually be what you think it means. For example, SWTOR does this with its force/moral choices, and I hated it. The choices presented are often either don't make sense, too limited, or misleading.

If someone cannot play a game because of the gender of the protagonist, I think that's ok, and games should not have to leave everything to the player just because different players want different things.

No no, you're thinking of player character as in XIV, but that's far from what I mean. You'd just be a "soldier" that joins the party, who's never acknowledged by the story at all. The townspeople might acknowledge you lightly but not in a real story based kind of way. It'd just give you the option to have a character you actually like being in the party, as opposed to the effeminate main character they always seem to make; with a supporting cast that's not much better (depending on which FF, it's just been the case a lot lately).
You'd have to have played games like White Knight Chronicles to really get the gist of it.

I get what you are saying and definitey there are single player games where character creation shines (like Skyrim, Dragon Age), however, the hallmark of Final Fantasy is producing characters that go down as legends. Names like Cloud, Tidus, etc, are legends and you know what they look like.

If I mention right now FF 14's Warrior of Light, does anything come to mind? Are they at the same “legendary” status as Zidane? I think not really. The reason is because we don’t know what they look like. All we know are our own characters’ faces.

Ok, if I misunderstood you, I'm sorry, but what you're saying here is what I don't like. If you mean having the option to create a character as part of your party, I'm ok with that as long as it's not the main character.

Ahh, yes, the Avatar of Illusion. Powers include not appearing in any cutscenes, being forgotten by the developers until the end of the second game, and being immune to anyone talking to/at him.

Amen. If I only played games which had protagonists that matched my gender, I would miss out on a lot of cool games.
