WoW's massive decline had nothing to do with it "being the same thing every expansion". MMO's by nature follow a repetitive formula for it's entire lifespan and WoW is no different in this regard. People didn't quit because they realized they had to climb the gear progression treadmill that exists in every expansion, they quit because they are using progression systems that mobile games use that don't reward the time and effort you put in but instead reward you with BiS gear from doing solo player quests out in the world. I'm not even gonna touch on the 6 month sub that rewarded a flying mount that is literally nothing but bait to increase their numbers for investors.
They quit because doing your daily chores aka World quests and Mythic+ dungeons give better gear than 24 man mythic raids. People also quit because none of the classes are even remotely enjoyable to play, every single class has been stripped and pruned to death what made them fun and are shells of their former selves.
So let's break this down: You have terribly boring game play because every class has been stripped of any fun or enjoyable element it used to have combined with the majority of content that isn't even remotely enjoyable. People will force themselves to walk through miles of broken glass because they know that doing these monotonous and boring tasks on classes that aren't fun to play will reward them with the best gear in the game regardless of how little that chance is ala Titanforging. But yeah, it's decline is totally because they've used the same formula every expansion that they've used for the last 14 years.
The only players who still play WoW would be hardcore raiders because thankfully the one area in WoW that isn't complete garbage is their Mythic raids and shills who are so incredibly steeped in their own delusions on how WoW has been the king of MMO's and it will never die no matter how bad it gets and that no other game will ever take it's spot in the limelight despite FFXIV objectively already having done so. This is what will eventually kill it off completely unless their entire dev team is replaced. End of story.
