I'm not sure Varis is actually dead. I hope not anyway, he's so much more of an interesting character than his son.
What I hope for? Varis struggles to his feet, pointing at Gaius and Estinien: "Guards, arrest these men. You all saw it - they just attacked the Emperor and murdered my son!"

Which would mean that Zenos, a guy that can one hit kill nearly anyone that he wants to, somehow did not kill him and also did not make sure that he is death. Also it would mean that Gaius somehow was able to kill Zenos.

That could change if we end up becoming "complete" by the end of the 6.0 MSQ.

I feel like Eden is likely going to shed more light on our ties to the ancients due to it almost certainly something of their creation, plus it was suggested we'd be using its power to undo the damage from the Flood so the First can truly recover.

For us to become complete we would need the souls of the other shards. That means that either somehow these exact people would end up on the source and that all of them are either death or completely willing to give up their life to be combined with us. (And the WoL would surely be even "happier" to have another bunch of people sacrifice themselves for her.)

I think that maybe the end of the story will be that we wont be ever fully complete but that this is fine. Its fine to not be perfect and with that we will end the conflict and show that even imperfect souls can protect the planet. Because if we only save it when we become complete, than that would leave a bit of a strange message imo.
