I, personally, think it's premature to pronounce Varis dead. It's not as though there's nobody around to prevent Zenos from double-tapping his dear old dad - Gaius is on the scene, and clearly has loyalty toward the Emperor. He might not be able to defeat Zenos directly in combat, but it's certainly possible he may be able to make off with an injured Varis. IMO, they still need to explain Varis's out-of-character crazyfase at the end of 3.5. :P

I'm also puzzled with Elidibus's defeat at Zenos's hands. Even if Zenos beat him to a pulp, what reason would Elidibus have to vacate his body? If Zenos outright kills him, he can just go find another body, no? And leave Zenos with an unusable corpse? I guess we'd need to know exactly what happened during the confrontation... Maybe Zenos has the power to shore up a corpse, just as the Ascians do. Maybe he DID kill Elidibus!Zenos, waited for the Ascian inside to vamoose, and then moved in to the pile of meat, stitching it together afterwards.

All in all, I continue to be disappointed by Zenos's character, which is odd. He's pretty much Kefka - but I love Kefka. Maybe because Kefka's hilarious, in addition to being a one-note murderous lunatic.

To be fair, Zenos already double-tapped Varis. As in Gaius and Estinien burst in on Zenos already having stabbed Varis through the chest, then after some speechifying on Varis's part, Varis pulls the sword out of his body (breaking it in the process), then Zenos just slashes down with the broken sword, implied to be the killing blow.

So if Varis survived, he would have to join Gaius in the ranks of Men Literally Too Angry Arrogant To Die.
