I think they should allow mailing between all accounts on a service account by default, that just makes sense. Either that or make like a storage chest that can store non-rare/ex stuff and gil that is account wide. Outside that I see no reason for anything else. The game is designed to be played on 1 character.

And for those commenting about why allow multiple character slots if they do not want alts. You are actually paying extra for that. the $12.99 sub is 1 per account it cost $2 more for the extras. (The $12.99 is not a discount, this has always been SE's mmo base sub cost all the way back to ffxi in 2004ish, and like that game to have extra characters it cost more)

One of the main draws of FFXI and FFXIV were you did not need alts to do everything the game has to offer, you had your 1 character which became your avatar in game. The option for alts is there but it was never a focus like other mmos where they were required to experience everything or change jobs. I currently see no reason to link everything to alts like in other games, since you can literally do everything on 1 character in ffxiv.

Outside RP there is no reason to have alts, simple as that.

For those not wanting to repeat the story.. I think it cost like $17-20 depending on the sale to skip it. Or you play a "New Game" when you start a new character.

Actualy, the standard base sub is $14.99/account
I currently have four characters and I have not been charged extra for them
As for alts, it's your account what other people say shouldn't matter.

I had to dig to find the 14.99 sub when I signed up. I was presented the 12.99 option by default. I'm glad I didn't find the 14.99 at first, though, because I only need my own character.

    I can understand not sharing
    • achievements
    • msq progress
    • dungeon gear

I cant understand not being able to:
    • mail general items / gil to alts
    • share seasonal gear (because it is only attainable once during event, so a future alt should be able to use it)
    • Purchased mog items - This one to me is the biggest sin of all. If there is a subscription option (which you pay extra for) to be able to have alts, the game should be far more friendly to people who do this.

    Solution:
The easiest solution is allow mailing to alts.
An alternate solution is to implement a personal "bank" type of inventory, that is separate from character inventory for sharing items to alts. It wouldn't have to be very large, even just 10~20 slots would be plenty. Allowing the storage of cosmetics, gil, and other stuff. With the success of the game, and how much money they make from the mogstation. A database "difficulty" is really just an excuse.
The community has been asking for this for years.

I only have one 'alt,' she is actually my original character. I played ARR, but stopped before ARR was finished. I came back right after Stormblood was released and couldn't remember ANYTHING. Instead of just choosing a different class to refresh myself, I started a new character who is now my main. Part of me is kicking myself because I have seasonal event items on my original I wish I had on my new (I can get them if I want to spend the money but I don't really want to do that) but I do like having my original to run through the story again. I can do msq on my main at my own pace, then when my friend gets on, I can run the msq with him on my old character. I would LOVE to be able to mail things between my two characters - I use my FC's chest or friends to transfer things right now. I would love to share my house with my alt as well. The rest - I don't want shared storage. That would halve the storage I have. Seasonal event items and mog station items, those should be account bound period.

No. Youre using meta-reasons why an alt that the game treats as a unique individual in world should have access to things.
Yes. Because from my point of view this is an entirely meta issue.

Short of Mogstation items in of themselves and a few exceptions, the game overwhelmingly treats every character as their own person, not an avatar of the player. As a point, youre not gonna have the "Ultimate Legend" title at level 15 and havent even done one dungeon yet.
Yet with NG+ I can do this. Yet I can functionally do identical to this by grabbing GLD and hitting up Sastasha.

You may have worked the keyboard, but to the world your avatar inhabits, 'you' dont exist, they do. Pretty much think of htis like a DnD campaign. If you roll a character that gets accolades for an accomplishment, rerolling a new character for whatever reason in that campaign will not net you those accolades. Youll be treated as a brand new person.
The difference between this and a DnD session is me re-rolling the character doesn't restart the campaign, and there is the distinct possibility of the re-roll getting the old character's gear. So there are already big differences between this and your example; that said, I already boldly stated my point of view that the character is an avatar for me--you know, the part you quoted and said "No. Meta points of view don't count."

From a business standpoint, you want that nice achievement on your alt, then grind and gear and work it out on your alt. Spend that time, as it's money in SEs pocket. They dont owe you access to achievements on alts. It's a convenience you want for purely personal reasoning. From a business standpoint, it would be a detriment to them to just hand over that feature to you.
You're absolutely right. I also pay extra money for the privilege of having an alt. Likewise, with this reasoning, there are no exceptions, even the ones that are generally agreed to be 'okay' to be account-wide, like mogstation: spend the extra money, get the mogstation items that they want.

It feels like you both read my post and didn't. Melichoir was on the mark saying it's meta reasoning. One thing that is in common with all of your characters no matter what, unless you're breaking ToS, is you, the player. As stated in the post, if you look at it from the meta perspective of the player having done the work, not the character, then the statement "Why have Saber Maxwell work hard and Vergil Maxwell get the rewards?" when, from my point of view, me the player is both of them.

The main issue of providing the player with an easy means of transferring items and gil from one character to another, is that things like Retainers can be exploited to profit at 8x the rate if you simply have a Standard subscription rather than an Entry level subscription.

Methods exist to work around this as it is, and it doesn't need to be easier. People don't want FFXIV to be pay to win. Enough of them already don't like that you can buy additional retainers.

At least we are not charged per character on a single account. FFXI charges you 1USD for each, though passing between alts is rather simple since you can mail stuff to your main/other alts. They probably didn't implement this in FFXIV as a way to impeded the activities of RMT. . .well we see that hasn't done very much.

In 1.0 they didn't have $2 a month for additional retainers. You paid $2 for character slots.

They kind of back pedaled on Alts in this after ARR.

    16-64 retainers per server,
    640,000 GC seals banking capacity,
16,000 capacity of any tome including Goetia as well as scrip stockpiles.

    A potential 56 maps a week
    Ignore specialist based content.

I don't see any penalty for Alts that isn't dwarfed by the benefits that come with quantity over quality.

I wish my characters could share a house, since I'm only allowed to own one, and that I could send mail between them. Other than that if changes are ever implemented I'd prefer to have an option to keep the rest separate. Suddenly having account wide achievements, seasonal items and main scenario would for me nearly defeat the purpose of having alts.
