I had to dig to find the 14.99 sub when I signed up. I was presented the 12.99 option by default. I'm glad I didn't find the 14.99 at first, though, because I only need my own character.
I can understand not sharing
- achievements
- msq progress
- dungeon gear
I cant understand not being able to:
- mail general items / gil to alts
- share seasonal gear (because it is only attainable once during event, so a future alt should be able to use it)
- Purchased mog items - This one to me is the biggest sin of all. If there is a subscription option (which you pay extra for) to be able to have alts, the game should be far more friendly to people who do this.
Solution:
The easiest solution is allow mailing to alts.
An alternate solution is to implement a personal "bank" type of inventory, that is separate from character inventory for sharing items to alts. It wouldn't have to be very large, even just 10~20 slots would be plenty. Allowing the storage of cosmetics, gil, and other stuff. With the success of the game, and how much money they make from the mogstation. A database "difficulty" is really just an excuse.
The community has been asking for this for years.

I only have one 'alt,' she is actually my original character. I played ARR, but stopped before ARR was finished. I came back right after Stormblood was released and couldn't remember ANYTHING. Instead of just choosing a different class to refresh myself, I started a new character who is now my main. Part of me is kicking myself because I have seasonal event items on my original I wish I had on my new (I can get them if I want to spend the money but I don't really want to do that) but I do like having my original to run through the story again. I can do msq on my main at my own pace, then when my friend gets on, I can run the msq with him on my old character. I would LOVE to be able to mail things between my two characters - I use my FC's chest or friends to transfer things right now. I would love to share my house with my alt as well. The rest - I don't want shared storage. That would halve the storage I have. Seasonal event items and mog station items, those should be account bound period.

The main issue of providing the player with an easy means of transferring items and gil from one character to another, is that things like Retainers can be exploited to profit at 8x the rate if you simply have a Standard subscription rather than an Entry level subscription.
Methods exist to work around this as it is, and it doesn't need to be easier. People don't want FFXIV to be pay to win. Enough of them already don't like that you can buy additional retainers.

At least we are not charged per character on a single account. FFXI charges you 1USD for each, though passing between alts is rather simple since you can mail stuff to your main/other alts. They probably didn't implement this in FFXIV as a way to impeded the activities of RMT. . .well we see that hasn't done very much.

In 1.0 they didn't have $2 a month for additional retainers. You paid $2 for character slots.
They kind of back pedaled on Alts in this after ARR.
16-64 retainers per server,
640,000 GC seals banking capacity,
16,000 capacity of any tome including Goetia as well as scrip stockpiles.
A potential 56 maps a week
Ignore specialist based content.
I don't see any penalty for Alts that isn't dwarfed by the benefits that come with quantity over quality.

I wish my characters could share a house, since I'm only allowed to own one, and that I could send mail between them. Other than that if changes are ever implemented I'd prefer to have an option to keep the rest separate. Suddenly having account wide achievements, seasonal items and main scenario would for me nearly defeat the purpose of having alts.

It's pretty bad, and it'd be nice if there was basic MMO functionality when it came to having different characters.
Gets kinda boring being on 1 data center, with 1 character, with 1 specific look.
Other MMO's have most of these functions for alts, and those functions didn't cause the downfall of the game and just... let people have some more variety in their life.
And, sorry-not-sorry, the SHB msq the second time through is really uninteresting.
For those who don't see the need for alts, that should only concern yourself, not others. I personally don't see the need for extremes, savages, raids, etc, that doesn't mean other people are nonsense for wanting them.
And no, a fantasia and an alt are not the same, I don't think it's hard to understand.
I fully agree alts should have less limitations, we already pay more for having them, at least make them easier. The not being able to pass items is the one that always troubled me the most. When I made this character I was back to the game after years and the game had changed completely, so it was easier to start anew. Also because returners get absolutely no bonuses and my old BiS armor was actually much lower level than what you got after from just story, so at all effects was undergeared. Since the old character had weaver levelled up I thought I could at least use her for some gear but nope.
I don't know about all the achievements, but at least sharing some hard unlocks? Most achievements I think should be per character though.
Housing i don't really care about having it shared.
For skipping MSQ there's already the potion so...but some slightly faster xp, similar to armory bonus for additional classes would be nice, even if a small %.
I totally, totally agree with the OP! I created 1 alt so I could do more savage but honestly never managed to go ahead with it because seems depressing doing everything from the begin without any short cut. My only request on this matter for SE is: please make AT LEAST mounts and Armoire (for glamours), seasonal items account wide. PLEASE (:
